Galaxy S6 Specs, Release Date, Price: What’s Latest?

Updated on

Samsung Electronics’ forthcoming flagship Galaxy S6 has been the center of rumors for months. As we inch closer to Samsung’s usual Galaxy S line launch windows of February/March, we have begun to see a lot of new concepts. The world’s largest smartphone maker is working on the Galaxy S6 under a project code named “Project Zero.” Here is a quick look at all the features, specs, and enhancements we expect to see in the Galaxy S6.

Galaxy S6 design

Samsung is well known for keeping the design of its flagship devices secret. However, there has been plenty of credible information from reliable sources. Reports suggest that the Galaxy S6 will have a unibody aluminum chassis. Last month, French website NoWhereElse obtained three images of the Galaxy S6 metal frames.

The new device will also get a major display upgrade. Rumors point to a 5.5-inch Quad HD display with 2560 x 1440 resolution. It will put the Galaxy S6 in the same league as the Galaxy Note 4, Note Edge and LG G3. Other reports claim that Samsung may bring the S6 with 4K display. At 5.5-inch, the S6 will be 0.2-inch bigger than its predecessor.

Galaxy S6 processor and storage

The device will likely be available in two processor variants. One will sport 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, and another model will get 64-bit Exynos 7420 octa-core processor. Qualcomm showed off the Snapdragon 810 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Both processors will offer a major performance enhancement. Rumors suggest that the Galaxy S6 will be available in three storage options: 32GB, 64GB and 128GB.

Galaxy S6 camera

The S6 will pack either 16MP or 20MP main camera. Alleged benchmarks have shown the device with both sensors, suggesting that Samsung is still toying with both. However, the front camera will get a major boost from 2MP in Galaxy S5 to 5-megapixel in Galaxy S6. A recent leak points to advanced camera features such as Optical Image Stabilization.

Release date and price

Samsung is reportedly showcasing the Galaxy S6 to its partners and telecom carriers at the Consumer Electronics Show. But consumers and media are unlikely to get a look at the device until Mobile World Congress in early March. South Korean website Daum reported that mass production of Galaxy S6 will begin in February and the device will hit the shelves in April. Samsung has historically unveiled the Galaxy S line devices at MWC in Barcelona, and the tradition is likely to continue.

As for pricing, there aren’t too many details available. But the International Business Times expects U.S. carriers to sell the device at $199 on a two-year contract.
