iPhone 6 To Feature 4.5 or 5-inch Screen: Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo

Updated on

The iPhone 6, which is expected out next year, will have a screen that’s between 4.5 and 5 inches in size, according to well-connected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In his latest note, he also said Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will base next year’s iPhone screen off of the in-cell touch screen technology, which the company started using with the iPhone 5. The technology makes it possible for the company to use thinner displays, thus making thinner handsets possible.

Will Apple really increase screen size with the iPhone 6?

The rumors about a bigger screen on an iPhone have been circulating all year long. It would seem as if Apple fans would really like to see a larger screen, and the rumors this year have run the gamut. Some have even said that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was experimenting with a 5.7-inch size screen in addition to the tests it was reported to be running on a 4.7-inch screen.

This latest report from Kuo seems to match up with a report this week from The Wall Street Journal. It suggests that Apple is testing iPhone screens that are between 4.8 inches and 6 inches in size. If the company does move to a multi-screen size approach over the next year, it would make sense, not just because the company’s competitors already do it, but also because it is a similar approach to what Apple did with its iPod.

The iPhone 5S to be unveiled today

In Apple’s big media event planned for today, we will likely see the iPhone 5S, which is expected to have the same 4-inch screen that the iPhone 5 has. As is usual with S iPhone upgrades, there is expected to be one major differentiator between the iPhone 5S and previous models. This year’s differentiator is expected to be a sapphire home button with a fingerprint scanner built right in.

Other expected features for this year’s iPhone include the option for a champagne-colored handset and a faster processor.
