Pandemic Recovery: Why We Need to Ramp up Industrial Hemp Now

The global cannabis and hemp market is expected to grow 4.4 percent by 2025, yet the United States still imported nearly $88 million in hemp products last year. This continues despite the nationwide legalization of hemp in the 2018 farm that opened the door for cultivation, sale, and distribution of this highly versatile plant.

“The recent Farm Bill that de-scheduled hemp could benefit the US in many ways, like providing an economically and environmentally sustainable option for several products, providing jobs, and boosting the economy,” says Harmon, who spent years researching hemp and produced the 2018 documentary “Hemp: Our Industrial Legacy.”  According to Harmon, “We are already witnessing this in many other countries, as they make full use of industrial hemp and reap the benefits.”

However, the US still has a long way to go to clear all the legal ambiguities connected with hemp, Harmon notes.

“Today, China remains the largest hemp producer, but France grows hundreds of thousands of acres of it,” he write. “Germany now grows tens of thousands of acres of it as well. The United States is one of the last countries to jump on the bandwagon and realize the potential of this crop, but we’re making progress.”
