Google Pixel 2 XL is already facing an issue that every OLED screen phone usually faces sometime later in its life. Reports of Pixel 2 XL screen burn-in problems from early buyers are flooding in on social media. Following the rise in the number of complaints, Google has now confirmed to Android Central that it is investigating the matter on its end, adding that the products are put through “extensive quality testing.”

Though Google has expressed willingness to fix the matter, it however, maintains that the Pixel 2XL should not face such problems as the device is made for rendering real-life colors. Google notes that the Pixel display is designed in a way to have a more natural and accurate rendition of colors, but since some users prefer more vivid colors, there is an option built-in to enhance the colors by 10% for a more saturated display. The search giant did mention that the company will add more color options through a software update taking note of user’s response, notes BGR.
Separately, in a statement to The Verge, a Google spokesperson said that the Pixel 2 XL screen is equipped with an advanced P-OLED technology, including the QHD+ resolution, wide color gamut and high contrast ratio for natural and beautiful colors and renderings. Further, the company said, “We put all of our products through extensive quality testing before launch and in the manufacturing of every unit.”

It is believed that LG is Google’s official vendor for the P-OLED display which is fixed on the Google Pixel 2 XL. Most of the complaints on social media appear valid at first glance. However, this could also be a case of image retention, which would disappear eventually on its own. Both are issues nevertheless, and need to be fixed.
Rising stakes for Google
Display has been a burning issue with the Pixel 2 XL ever since its launch. According to 9To5Google, their review unit from day one showed blue tint/discoloration at an angle. Some have also reported green lines and overall graininess. One of the users even reported getting the Pixel phone with an entire line of dead pixels.
Of all the smartphones at present, the iPhone 8 Plus possibly has the best screen, with the Galaxy S8 at a close second. Despite the better technology, the Pixel 2 XL is somewhere lost between the two phones, thanks to rising complaints. In addition, some now believe that the Pixel 2 is better as it is not marred by the issues that are facing its bigger brother. The Pixel 2 has received some great reviews, and many now see it as the top contender for anyone interested in a high-end Android device.
Google’s first Pixel phone also got full marks in terms of reviews. However, back then, Google did not put its full force into sales, and as a result Pixel disappeared sooner than expected. This year, with its Pixel 2 lineup, Google has been more aggressive in promoting the phone with a top-notch camera and pure Android experience. So, to keep the momentum going, it is very important for Google to address this Pixel 2 XL screen burn-in issue as soon as possible.
