The Google Pixel 2 Now Playing function can intelligently recognize over 17,000 songs that are playing in the background.
We are eagerly expecting to get to use Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL since the launch at Google’s Press conference on Oct. 4. Google already stated that the successors to the original Pixel series will sport various features and one of these features is an innovative ambient music recognition technology.
As mentioned above, the Google Pixel 2 Now Playing technology can identify nearly any song that it hears in the background. More importantly, the technology works offline, meaning it doesn’t have to communicate with external servers in order to obtain the information about a certain song. Also, Google said that the Pixel 2 Now Playing feature has over 10,000 songs in Google’s database. Also, the list is going to get updated with support in order to recognize more tunes in the future. When it recognizes the song, the Pixel 2 Now Playing feature will display the information regarding the tune on the locked screen.
The XDA did some digging and managed to pull out 17,300 songs by pulling the 53MB matcher.Leveldb file, which is located in /system/etc/ambient. Kieron Quinn, a developer who managed to grab 17,300 songs from Google’s database, said that he isn’t sure whether this list is complete or not.
When XDA presumed that LevelDB, a storage library, had the list of songs the Google Pixel 2 Now Playing feature recognizes, they sent it to Kieron Quinn, also known as Quinny898 on their forums, who said that the library is the one that contains the songs.
It is still unsure whether this list of 17,300 songs for Google Pixel 2 Now Playing technology is complete. Moreover, the developer isn’t entirely sure whether the program he used accurately pulled everything that was found in the database. Also, knowing Google, the list will undoubtedly continue to grow as new songs come out in order to keep its technology precise and always up-to-date.
The developer also stated that the database was very hard to read, which means that the songs may repeat on the list or contain random characters in the name. Still, we hope that the list accurately features the 17,300 songs, given, the more the merrier. Also, that makes technology smarter in recognizing the ambient music and moreover confirms Google’s statement that there will be 10,000+ songs contained in the list.
