The latest reports on the Galaxy Note 6 suggest that Samsung will be including some new functionality in this major phablet contender. In recent years, the Galaxy Note series has stood out as the outstanding device range manufactured by Samsung, and it seems that this is set to continue with a particularly outstanding Galaxy Note 6 release.

It seems that Samsung will place a much greater emphasis on the durability of the Galaxy Note series in 2016, and thus the Galaxy Note 6 will be significantly water resistant. Sources close to Samsung suggest that the main body of the Galaxy Note 6 will be IP68 certified, in common with the earlier release this year of the Galaxy S7.

In addition to this new feature, Samsung will also introduce a new iris reading functionality that will have a security remit within the device. Samsung has also reportedly imported an ‘iris cam’ into India for its R&D activities.

This will be a particularly important device release for Samsung, as It is believed that the Korean company will push the release date of the Galaxy Note 6 forward in order to enable the device to have its own release window separate from the vastly successful iPhone series. Not only is Samsung battling Apple, but the number of affordable Android alternatives appearing on the marketplace means that the market share of the Korean corporation is being seriously threatened.

The trend for lesser known Android variants to challenge Samsung was exemplified by the recent release of the Huawei P9. Once upon a time, this company would have generated little interest and attention, owing to the fact that it simply wasn’t a household name. But such manufacturers are now beginning to garner attention, and this is reflected in the emboldened stance of Huawei, including dual-camera technology in its new flagship smartphone.

Galaxy Note 6’s large 4K display

Reports have also indicated that Samsung will include 4K technology in the Galaxy Note 6, which would be something of a landmark. Despite persistent rumors that Samsung would embrace this technology in its mobile range previously, the Korean corporation has shied away from its inclusion.

But it seems that the Galaxy Note 6 may benefit from 4K resolution, while Samsung will also arm the device with a particularly large display. Korean reports have suggested that there will be a six-inch screen fitted in the Galaxy Note 6, which coupled with the 4K resolution technology would make a truly revolutionary device. It is possible that a display of this size would also necessitate an edge-to-edge display considering that the existing Galaxy Note 5 is a pretty sizeable device in itself.

With Samsung needing a fair amount of processing power in order to run its sizeable and detailed display, it has also been widely rumored that the Galaxy Note 6 will feature at least 6GB of RAM. Even an incredible 8GB has been mentioned in some quarters, but it seems more likely that the lower figure will be accurate.

Another intriguing rumor regarding the Galaxy Note 6 – even though the legitimacy of it has yet to be confirmed – is that the next generation phablet could be a dual-purpose device. A patent has been filed by Samsung which reveals a technology developed by the corporation which would enable a smartphone or phablet to also double as a laptop.

It is suggested that this technology could conceivably debut in the Galaxy Note 6, enabling Samsung consumers to benefit from a device with two separate modes. In addition, this would necessitate the Galaxy Note 6 being armed with two operating systems, with the laptop version of the smartphone essentially being powered by a lightweight version of Windows.

Camera tech

Samsung is also expected to migrate the dual-pixel technology which debuted in the Galaxy S7 earlier this year when the Galaxy Note 6 is released. This innovation ensures that the Galaxy range can capture superior photographs in darker conditions; a traditional bugbear of smartphone cameras in general.

There have been widely contrasting reports regarding the other capabilities of the smartphone, with some sources suggesting that the megapixel rating will be identical to that of the Galaxy S7, and others suggesting that it could be significantly increased from this 12-megapixel figure.

Storage upgrade

Among other improvements, Samsung is likely to reinstate micro SD technology when the Galaxy Note 6 is released, and there also suggestions that internal storage will be improved as well. This could mean that it is possible to upgrade the internal storage of the Galaxy Note 6 to 256GB; in-line with what analysts believe the Apple iPhone 7 will offer.

This would seem to be particularly important if Samsung indeed decides to include 4K resolution in the Galaxy Note 6, as this will place a premium on storage in this device range.
