Samsung Galaxy S5 will not be loaded with an Iris scanner, says a report from Patently Apple. The report, citing a Korean Press source, stated that Samsung will be without an Iris scanner in its new phone.
No iris scanner for Galaxy S5
Earlier reports said that the Galaxy S5 will have iris scanner, and the Korean electronics giant has already started working on it. However, the recent report suggests a contrary view, where it would take a year or two for Samsung to embed the technology into its phones.
The report said that making Iris recognition in the smartphone a camera with the identification technology is a mandate, which would increase the size of the smartphone as there will be three camera modules. Also, a long range camera is required for the Iris scanner, which has to be designed differently from the previous models.
Samsung will fix a fingerprint scanner to its smartphone instead of a retina scanner. According to report, the use of eyes for the authentication is not needed or wanted, particularly when a user is driving or watching movies.
Earlier this month, in CES, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) EVP Lee Young Hee gave an interview, saying, “many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology. We are studying the possibility but can’t really say whether we will have it or not on the S5.” Probable suppliers of Iris scanner, IriTech Inc. and Sambon Precision and Electronics Co also said that they are experimenting with such a feature, but cannot be sure of it for now.
Other expected features
A report from SamMobile, citing a source close to the company, says that the Galaxy S5 will be launched in two variants; one with metal encasing and another one with a plastic body. The source also revealed that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will have an AMOLED screen display with 2,560×1,440 pixel resolution, as well as a 16 MP back camera.
Other features that are expected in the Samsung Galaxy S5 are octo-core Exynos 6 chipset or a Snapdragon 805 SoC for the 4G/LTE variant. The Samsung Galaxy S5 would be reportedly packed with Android 4.4 Kitkat OS. The device is expected to launch in April. Recently, a report in CNET stated that the company has filed a patent that says the Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) Galaxy S5 may have a head tracking device and other gesture controls.
