Galaxy S5 Release Date And New Features

Updated on

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s next flagship smartphone Galaxy S5 is expected to go on sale early next year. But rumors about its features and specifications have been pouring in for the past several weeks. The latest media reports suggest some entirely new features of the Galaxy S5. The Korean electronics giant is expected to launch the Galaxy S5 in two variants: SM-G900S and SM-G900F. The latter is going to be the premium version of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s next flagship device, and will come with a metal exterior. The SM-G900S is the low-cost variant that comes with the usual plastic case.

Galaxy S5 with PLS LCD display

Korean site ETNews reports that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) may replace the Super AMOLED display with PLS LCD display in Galaxy S5. It will help the electronics giant cut manufacturing costs by about 20%. According to IBTimesthe Galaxy S4’s production cost per unit was $236, of which the AMOLED display alone costs $75. The Korean company has already used PLS LCD display in its tablets.

An LCD display consumes less battery and has more natural colors. But the Full HD AMOLED display has become an integral feature of the Galaxy S line. There have been similar rumors about the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 as well, but both devices came with AMOLED displays. So, we’re not sure if this rumor could be true.

Galaxy S5 to have much slimmer design?

Reports (once again from ETNews) suggest that Galaxy S5 will be slimmer than its predecessor. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) could achieve this by using the LDS antenna technology that was previously used in the Galaxy Note 3. A LDS antenna simplifies the manufacturing and reduces the number of inner components. The Galaxy Note 3 has a breadth of 8.3mm compared to 9.7mm of its predecessor. So, if Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) uses an LDS antenna in the Galaxy S5, it would make the device at least 1mm thinner than the Galaxy S4’s 7.9mm breadth.

What about Galaxy F?

There have been reports that the premium or metal chassis version of the next Galaxy smartphone could be an entirely new device under the name Galaxy F. The premium new line of smartphones could demote the flagship Galaxy S series. Though the Galaxy F may sport some high-end features and latest software, it may not have the LDS antenna. A device with a metal panel may not conduct frequencies properly, so the LDS antenna could be used only in the plastic version of Galaxy S5.

Galaxy S5 with 8X brighter camera

The patent tracking site Patent Bolt recently reported that the Korean company has developed a 13MP camera module with anti-shake function that could give eight times brighter pictures than the current Galaxy devices in low light. It will consume less power, improving battery life of the device.

Other expected features of the Galaxy S5 include a 64-bit Exynos processor, Isocell camera sensor, flexible design, 4GB RAM, 4000mAh battery and a built-in projector.
