New Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Camera Details Leaked

Updated on

As the official reveal date of the Galaxy Note 8 draws closer, it appears we are going to be treated with more and more leaks every day. This latest leak comes from ET News and offers up some more specific details about the Galaxy Note 8 camera. We already know that Samsung is moving ahead with a dual camera sensor setup on their upcoming flagship thanks to leaks and renders but, until now, we didn’t know much more about the kind of hardware that would be packed into the device.

According to the report, the Galaxy Note 8 camera will be made up of two different sensors – one will be a 12MP dual-image pixel sensor and the other will be a 13MP telephoto sensor. Both will have optical image stabilization as well as 2x optical zoom.

This is going to be the first Samsung smartphone to feature a dual camera sensor so it will be interesting to see what kind of software features they pack into the device in order to make use of these two sensors. We did see a leak recently that revealed some of Samsung’s marketing materials pertaining to the camera. In those materials we got to see some interesting features.

The optical zoom is going to be an amazing feature in the Galaxy Note 8 camera. Most smartphones utilize digital zoom in their cameras. This is usually fine but when you compare the quality of optical zoom next to digital zoom it’s not even close to being the same. Optical zoom allows for a much more focused shot when zoomed in. The lines of distant objects are sharp and clear while, with digital zoom, the lines are blurred and pixelated.

The dual sensors will also be able to capture more light which will allow for very good low-light performance. With two sensors working together, it’s unfair to compare a single camera sensor to a dual camera sensor when looking at low-light shots.

One very interesting feature we saw in the marketing materials leak was a perspective change. Because the Galaxy Note 8 camera will have two sensors, each photo will be captured at two slightly different angles. This allows Samsung to use software which allows you to view the image from different angles as well. Their marketing materials didn’t exactly tell the whole story so it’s hard to know for sure how this will work. It would be very cool if you could move and twist the smartphone in your hand to see different angles of the photo you just took. Of course, we will probably have to wait until Samsung officially reveals the Galaxy Note 8 before we know for sure what the feature is able to do.

Another great advantage of dual camera sensors is their ability to provide the smartphone with information which can be used to do complex calculations. For example, there is an image in the leaked marketing materials that shows the camera calculating distance to a subject as well as the height of the subject. This may seem like a random, useless feature at first but it actually has a lot of implications for augmented reality. AR applications can go to an entirely new level if they’re able to measure distance and height of objects or people in an image. Apple has made no secret of their big push into AR this fall and it would only make sense that Samsung has similar plans for their own flagship device.

Finally, one of the best features of the iPhone 7 Plus could be coming to the Galaxy Note 8 thanks to the dual camera sensors. Portrait Mode in the iPhone 7 Plus has been regarded as one of the best camera features available in a smartphone. The whole reason that Apple’s Portrait Mode works so well is because of their dual camera sensor setup. Other manufacturers have tried to achieve the same effect with mixed results. Single camera sensors simply cannot capture enough information to compete with the dual camera sensor on the iPhone 7 Plus. Now, the Galaxy Note 8 camera looks like it’s ready to give the iPhone 7 Plus a run for its money. Once the Galaxy Note 8 is released, I’m sure we will be seeing a lot of camera comparisons between the two devices.

It won’t be long now until the Galaxy Note 8 rumors and leaks are done. The device is going to be announced next week on August 23rd. Samsung revealed this in their latest teaser video which shows off the S Pen and an outline of the Galaxy Note 8’s new infinity display. We’re definitely in for a big launch this year. Samsung not only has to overcome the brutal Note 7 release but also compete with the iPhone 8 and Google Pixel XL 2 this fall. If the Galaxy Note 8 camera is as good as we think it could be; Samsung may be well on their way to a hit product launch.
