New Leak Reveals Galaxy Note 8 Camera Features

Updated on

With a rumored reveal date sometime in late-August, we are presumably less than a month away from seeing the Galaxy Note 8 in all its phablet glory. Of course, as we get closer to the reveal, leaks about the much-anticipated smartphone are going to start to come fast and heavy. This isn’t leak season anymore: we’re into heavy downpour season. The latest leak from Samsung gives a very good look at some new Galaxy Note 8 camera features.

If you’ve been following along with the leaks over the past few weeks then you know that it’s all but confirmed that the Galaxy Note 8 will feature a dual camera sensor. Until now, it wasn’t clear what kind of features would be packed into the device in order to utilize that dual camera sensor to its fullest. The images below come from some leaked product marketing materials. Let’s jump in and see what’s (allegedly) in store this fall.

The Smart Zoom feature appears to suggest that the one of the major Galaxy Note 8 camera features will be 3x optical zoom. Most single camera sensors offer digital zoom. Even dual camera sensors like the one we see in the OnePlus 5 have only achieved true optical zoom of 1.6x. That would make the Galaxy Note 8 arguably the most impressive camera sensor on the market once it launches. The above image compares 3x digital zoom and 3x optical zoom. As you can see, the optical zoom offers a much sharper image. The comparison isn’t even fair. If you love taking photos on your smartphone then the Galaxy Note 8 will be a great device to have.

Perspective shift is another interesting feature. Since there are two different cameras taking shots a 2 different angles; it appears that Samsung is able to use software to offer multiple perspectives of the original image. What’s more interesting is that the marketing materials appear to suggest that this effect will be achieved by turning your smartphone. So, as you move your smartphone while viewing a photo, the perspective will change based on your movement. That could be one of the more interesting Galaxy Note 8 camera features and make viewing photos feel more realistic and interactive.

The above two images show what is possible when shooting in low-light situations with a dual camera sensor. Because there are two sensors, the Galaxy Note 8 will be able to capture more light which should lead to brighter photos. You can see the comparison between a single camera sensor and dual camera sensor in those images. This shouldn’t be a huge surprise – more light equals brighter photos. Still, it’s nice to see what a difference the dual camera sensor makes when compared with a single camera sensor.

This next image shows the ability of the dual camera sensor to refocus after taking the shot. This won’t be one of the exclusive Galaxy Note 8 camera features as most dual camera sensors should be able to do this. The illustrated image is very interesting, however. It appears that the Galaxy Note 8 will be able to use the power of its dual camera sensors to make measurements like distance and height. That would be especially handy in AR applications. We know Apple is going to be taking AR very seriously with the iPhone 8 so hopefully Samsung has a few tricks of their own coming down the pipeline.

If these marketing leaks are, in fact, accurate then we could be in for a real treat when it comes to the Galaxy Note 8 camera features. We’re at the point in smartphone development where the camera is more than something for taking photos. Augmented reality applications require quality, accurate camera sensors. Luckily, we won’t have to wait much longer to see everything the Galaxy Note 8 camera can do. With the suspected reveal coming on August 23rd the countdown is officially on.
