Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V) is said to be close to releasing a true PureView Windows phone. The smartphone maker released the first phone with a PureView camera back in March. That phone was the Nokia 808, and it was powered by Symbian; it was mostly built to just show off the PureView technology.
The true PureView Windows phone is currently codenamed the EOS, and according to reports, it will have a sensor similar to the one in the 808. Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V) decided not to use that sensor in its current lineup of Lumia phones because it was very thick. Instead the company took some of the other features of the PureView camera and incorporated them into the Lumia.
The Verge reports the EOS will reportedly not only have the image stabilization and other features of the previous Lumia line borrowed from Nokia’s PureView technology, but possibly also the 41 megapixel sensor that Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V) thought was too thick to put in the previous line of Lumia phones. The Lumia 920, Nokia’s top-of-the-line Lumia currently, has only an 8 megapixel sensor.
The EOS is also expected to have an aluminum frame rather than polycarbonate, which was the material used for the Lumia 920. The new frame should make the phone lighter even if the sensor adds weight, and like the other phones in the Lumia lineup, the EOS will run on Windows 8.
According to anonymous sources cited by The Verge, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) is expected to sell the refreshed Lumia later this year.
