Nokia 9 Specs Revealed In FCC Certification, Pictures Leaked

Updated on

HMD Global tested the waters in the premium segment with the Nokia 8. The company is now gearing up to unveil Nokia 9, a true premium smartphone that would compete with the latest iPhones, LG V30, and Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S9. Ahead of the formal announcement, an FCC certification has revealed most of the Nokia 9 specs. Meanwhile, a leaked image that appeared on Weibo shows what the device would look like.

Nokia 9 specs: 5.5-inch OLED panel, Snapdragon 835, dual camera

The rumor mill has already let out the Nokia 9 specs over the last few weeks. But it’s the first time the details are coming from a credible source like the FCC. Nokia 9 was spotted passing through the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC certification comes just days after the phone was certified by Chinese regulators. China’s 3C had certified three models- TA-1005, TA-1042, and TA-1009. All three of them had a single SIM card slot.

The FCC has certified the TA-1005 version of the flagship handset. The US regulator was generous enough to post screenshots of the About screen besides the detailed list of Nokia 9 specs. According to the documents, its code-name is ‘Avatar.’ The Nokia 9 sports a 5.5-inch OLED screen made by LG Display, which is an upgrade from the Nokia 8’s 5.3-inch LCD panel. It will offer deeper blacks and more vibrant colors than the Nokia 8. The Nokia 9 will be HMD’s first smartphone to sport an OLED panel.

The FCC documents suggest that the device would be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, the same processor that runs the Nokia 8. It would be a bit of a disappointment as most of the premium Android phones coming next year would be powered by Qualcomm’s newly announced Snapdragon 845. As it turns out, Samsung has called the first dibs on the Snapdragon 845, which means other vendors will have to opt for older processors or delay the launch of their phones by several weeks.

Other Nokia 9 specs include a huge 128GB of internal storage, twice the storage offered by Nokia 8. It is unclear whether the phone will have a microSD card slot. It would come with a 3250mAh battery compared to the Nokia 8’s 3090mAh. It will also offer 18W fast charging support. The Nokia 9 would run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, reveal the FCC documents.

There is no word on its design, RAM or price. But the FCC did mention the phone’s camera specifications. The Nokia 9 will have a dual camera system consisting of a 12MP sensor and a 13MP sensor on the back panel. The Nokia 8 has two 13MP sensors. Surprisingly, the Nokia 9 has a mere 5MP front camera compared to the Nokia 8’s 13MP selfie snapper.

The FCC added that the Nokia 9 would support all the cellular frequency bands to make it compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T.

Nokia 9 image leaked

A leaked render that appeared on Weibo (via showcases what the phone’s front panel would look like. The picture suggests that the phone would have slim bezels and a metal finish body. It has two camera sensors on the front. It looks slightly different from a Nokia 9 case render listed on Amazon UK, which showed the phone with a curved display similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S8.

This design would be a welcome change from the Nokia 8, which has immensely thick bezels at the top and bottom. Since the picture shows only the front panel, there is no way to tell whether the rear panel will be glass or metal, and where the fingerprint sensor is going to sit. The phone is expected to have an 18:9 aspect ratio similar to the LG V30 and Galaxy S8.

The rumor mill claims Nokia 9 would have an IP68 rating for water- and dust-resistance. It means the phone can remain submerged in up to five-feet deep water for 30 minutes. The device is expected to retain the 3.5mm headphone jack. Just like Nokia 8, the upcoming flagship would have the OZO surround sound technology to enhance the audio experience.

Nokia 9 price and release date

With the Nokia 9 getting certification from regulators, its release seems imminent. It will be one of the first premium Android phones to arrive in 2018. HMD Global will reportedly hold a media event on January 19, where it could announce the new phone. HMD would also launch the Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 8 (2018) at the same event.

It is not known how much the Nokia 9 would cost, but we can expect it to have a higher price tag than the Nokia 8. Early reports claim that the device would cost CNY4199 ($635) in China. Other reports suggest it would be priced at EUR 750 in European markets. The handset is expected to hit the store shelves later in January or early February. It will also be sold in the US.
