Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) Now Offers 4K Content On Select Shows

Updated on

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) now streams on 4K televisons. The entertainment streaming service confirmed on Sunday that it began streaming the 4K version of their popular original series House of Cards and a few nature documentaries. The 4K streams are only available on 2014 4K television sets which feature the built-in H.265/HEVC decoder.

4K TV market to grow

Many of the major brand 4K TVs featured at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show are just starting to ship now. CNET offered a report on the new televisions earlier this year. The report read, “As expected 4K TVs were everywhere. The real question, as yet unanswered, is how much they’ll cost. Vizio says it will charge $1000 for its 50-inch P-series, a price that will surely make the Samsungs and Sonys of the world take heed. Sony Corporation (NYSE:SNE) (TYO:6758) talked up its entry-level 4K models, and LG is expected to aggressively target mass-market pricing , albeit at the expense of picture quality. Most of the 4K sets from major makers this year will get HDMI 2.0 -compatible silicon, but it’s seeming less and less likely that significant 4K content will arrive via HDMI this year. At a CES panel I attended, the speakers — including Comcast CTO Tony Werner and Sony Pictures President Chris Cookson–discussed how the initial delivery mechanism will be from a streaming service (like Netflix or Amazon Instant or Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA)’s 4K app for Samsung TVs) directly to the TV itself.”

Netflix branches out to 4K

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) is a key player in the movie/television show streaming market. Thanks to the growing interest in cable alternatives as well as the rise of internet-ready televisions, consumers have more choices in home entertainment. This latest move is just the beginning of what we can expect from Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) in the near future.

4K Streaming is the future. Prior to today, owners of 4K televisions could view 4K content with Sony Corporation (NYSE:SNE) (TYO:6758)’s video player that works exclusively with Sony 4K televisions. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) will soon offer 4K players compatible exclusively with their 4K televisions.
