Local workers continue to express support for Cisneros’ campaign to unseat anti-worker incumbent Congressman Cuellar

LAREDO, TX – Today, Democratic candidate for Congress Jessica Cisneros announced her support from labor organizations continues to grow as La Joya American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 4632 and National Nurses United (NNU) formally endorsed her campaign. These two groups join other local workers’ rights organizations and union CWA District 6 in supporting Cisneros’ campaign to unseat anti-worker incumbent Congressman Henry Cuellar in Texas’s 28th Congressional District.

“Nurses and teachers are the backbone of our community in South Texas. Throughout my life, I’ve watched as our health care professionals and educators work extra hours to compensate for the failure of our government institutions,” said Cisneros. “Our local unions know I’ll be a fighter for equal opportunity in access to education and healthcare. I’m ready to work alongside the incredible registered nurses and teachers of Texas’ 28th district to make the opportunities I had — a college degree and the chance to become an attorney — a reality for many more young people in our community.”

"La Joya AFT is proud to endorse Jessica Cisneros in her effort to represent us in the 28th district of Texas,” said La Joya AFT President Brenda Lee Salinas. “As a proud daughter of immigrants and a product of public schools, we know Jessica will fight to protect public education. From improving access to college, protecting school teachers, social security, and retirement pensions - Ms. Cisneros gets it right."

Is Cueller anti-worker?

“We are excited to endorse Jessica Cisneros for Congress because she shares nurses’ values of caring, compassion, and community,” said Jean Ross, RN, president of National Nurses United. “Every day, nurses see the devastating effects of a deeply flawed health care system on our patients. Jessica will be a champion for Medicare for All, safe staffing in our hospitals, free college tuition, confronting the climate crisis, a humane immigration policy, and other vital measures to help, heal, and protect South Texans and create a more humane world.”

La Joya AFT Local 4632 is among the most prominent local unions in Texas’ 28th Congressional District, representing over 1,500 school employees in La Joya Independent School District. National Nurses United represents over 150,000 registered nurses across the United States.

These two endorsements follow on the heels of Jessica’s support from Communication Workers of America District 6 (representing 98 CWA Locals in Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas, including Local 6143 in Texas) and as Cuellar’s anti-worker record receives increased scrutiny, including coverage in Bloomberg Law and The Intercept last week focused on Cuellar’s anti-worker voting record and Jessica Cisneros’ growing support among organized labor.
