iPhone X Plus Launch Date Set For 2018 [REPORT]

Updated on

We’ve only just been able to get our hands on the iPhone X, and now there is talk of an iPhone X Plus and two other new iPhone models. The iPhone X Plus launch date is set to be late in 2018. Two of the new iPhones will be the biggest handsets Apple has ever produced, crossing more than 6-inches and following the edge-to-edge design we saw in the iPhone X.

The three new devices are set to include a 6.5″ OLED model, a 5.8″ OLED model, and a 6.1″ TFT-LCD model. The source of this information is Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at the well-respected KGI Securities company, who in the past have always shown to have reliable information when it comes to upcoming Apple devices.

Kuo believes that all three of these new handsets will follow in the same form factor as the iPhone X, with an edge-to-edge, notched screen design.

While 6.5″ does seem large for an Apple iPhone, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about it. Last September we heard rumours of a 6.5″ device due to come next year. That was around the same time which Kuo reported that Apple will get rid of the home button and Touch ID, replacing it with Face ID, for all iPhones arriving in 2018.

At the moment, the largest iPhone screen is on the iPhone 8 Pls, which boasts a 5.5″ screen. So, the iPhone X Plus screen will be a full inch larger than Apple’s current largest screen. The iPhone X has a 5.8″ screen, and the iPhone 8 has a 4.7″ screen.

As there are plans for a 5.8″ OLED model next year, this is likely the 2nd generation of the iPhone X (the first gen being 5.8″ too), and the 6.5″ OLED screen will be the iPhone X Plus. Leaving the 6.1 TFT-LCD as the ‘budget’ version for the low/mid-range markets.

There are still people out there trying to decide if they want to upgrade to the iPhone X or iPhone 8, and now we know of these 3 new models being released next year, their decision will be even harder. Do you purchase now? Or do you wait for the updated model next year?

We’ve recently covered a number of issues which affect some of the new iPhone X devices, such as problems with the speaker, and the dreaded green line along the edge of the display. Things like that will likely all have been solved and non-existent by the time these new models are released next year.

How Much Will The New iPhones Cost?

Kuo didn’t provide an estimate for the cost of the next iPhone X (which currently starts at $999), or the iPhone X Plus, but he did state that the new 6.1″ TFT-LCD model will likely be aimed at the low/mid-range markets and estimates the pricing to be around the $649 – 749 mark.

As with other iPhones aimed at this market, the device will have significant differences in terms of hardware and design specs. For example, the PPI will be considerably lower. The main selling points for the TFT-LCD model will be the new edge-to-edge design and 3D sensing / facial recognition.

How Likely is a 2018 iPhone X Plus Launch Date?

Considering Apple already has a supply chain in place who are experienced with the iPhone X production, and the fact that Kuo is a very reliable source for information regarding Apple products. It seems very likely that we’ll all be tuned in to the Apple Event next year and seeing these devices being debuted.

Conclusion

It’s no surprise that Apple will release new models next year, but it is surprising to have this information so early after the iPhone X being released. It’s clear that the iPhone X has shaped the design in which we’ll see on iPhone devices over the coming years. We may even see this design appearing on the iPad devices too.

The main thing to take away from this information is that the iPhone X design seems to be the future of iPhone, for now, and that Apple will be releasing a plus sized version, and a budget friendly version, alongside the 2nd Gen iPhone X next year.
