Homeless/Communal Russian Cat Credited With Saving Boy’s Life

Updated on

Abandoned baby meets “homeless” cat may sound like the work of Disney, but in real life it makes for “hero cat.”

I’ll be the first to say I’m a cat person. I don’t dislike dogs, nor am I suggesting a dog wouldn’t do the same; but, hell, it was a cat.

This heartwarming tale, unfortunately begins with an indictment of the cold nature of some “humans.” In the town of Obninsk in the Kaluga region of Russia, someone or something the police have yet to identify abandoned a baby boy of 2-3 months in the entrance to a Soviet-era apartment block in below zero (Celsius) temperatures. Despite leaving clean diapers and food with the child, I think we can all agree this is disgraceful.

Russian cat Masha to the rescue

Thankfully for the child, Masha, a long-haired tabby cat was on the case. According to TV Zvezda, Masha abandoned the box she lives in and jumped into the box that the child was abandoned in and “warmed the baby for several hours with her body.”

Masha is apparently “cared for” by local residents that don’t wish to house her and sleeps in a box in the apartment block. Presumably, they feed her but there ends their commitment to her. (Perhaps that will soon change)

Hearing cries from both cat and baby, Nadezhda Makhovikova opened the door to discover Masha trying to warm the child.

“When I went down, I saw it was the baby crying, she told TV Zvedzda adding that Masha ran after the baby once taken to an ambulance by paramedics.

Vera Ivanina, a paramedic, told REN TV: “She was so worried about where we were taking the baby. She ran right behind us, meowing.”

Child is in good health

The child was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was given a sound bill of health.

“The baby had only been outside for a few hours and thanks to Masha … he was not damaged by the experience,” a hospital spokesman told Central European News.

“Everyone in the block is very proud of her,” said another resident of the apartment block, Irina Lavrova. “We have all spoiled her rotten by giving her her favorite food.”

Close your eyes, envision the story, and there is your cat video of the week.
