The back-to-school craziness has begun to settle, but the holiday season is just around the corner! Some stores have already started to decorate and advertise (I swear it happens earlier each year). This is one time of year when it really pays to plan ahead. As you start making your lists, don’t forget to thank your clients! It’s the perfect time of year to let them know how appreciative you are for their business.

I’ve summarized some of my favorite ways you can show your clients that you care.

Sending a holiday card is most popular way to send holiday cheer. And it doesn’t (and maybe shouldn’t) have to be a traditional Christmas card. There is a good chance that you have clients that celebrate different holidays, so consider sending a Thanksgiving greeting, holiday card or a New Year’s newsletter or postcard.

If you are small and have the ability to really get to know the families that you service, send them one of your own family holiday cards. You work with their family, so why shouldn’t they get to know yours? Deliver an even more unique experience by having a designer create a custom card just for your firm. You can have the design easily printed from a site like Remember that sending a generic card will just get added to their growing pile. But if you don’t have the time or resources to do something unique, don’t sweat getting something in the mail and try again next year. No matter what type of card you send, always remember to hand sign it and ask your staff to do so as well.

Holiday gifts are always a hit! They are a great way to show your gratitude for your clients’ business. Something as small as cookies, candies or peanuts is always a nice touch to give to your top clients. Who doesn’t like a good peanut? Well, those that are allergic, but it’s the thought right? Have a CRM in place and take good notes, so when holiday time comes around you know exactly what to get your top clients. Another idea to consider is to help the less fortunate and donate to one of your, or their, favorite charities. This could be of more value to your clients than any gift you can give them.

Want to go the extra mile? Host a holiday party to thank your clients in person! Some of my favorite ideas include inviting top clients to a local production of a play or musical, hosting a wine and cheese event for clients (consider inviting top prospects too), and planning a fun holiday outing to somewhere like a bowling alley or local arcade (think Dave and Busters). This is a great way to let your clients get to know you on a more personal level. Have fun and encourage them to as well!
