The Galaxy S8 hasn’t even been announced, and it’s already crushing its competition. The smartphone – set to be announced on March 29th – is seen as Samsung’s comeback device after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco. The Galaxy S8 has been benchmarked ahead of its unveiling. Benchmark results show that it is way more powerful than Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus and every other Android smartphone out there.
Galaxy S8 scores 205,284 points on AnTuTu
The Geekbench 4 benchmark results leaked last week showed that the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus outperform the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in multi-core performance, but lag behind in single-core performance. A new video posted on Vimeo (first spotted by IBTimes) shows the Galaxy S8 (SM-G950) performing the AnTuTu benchmark test. It achieved a score of 205,284, higher than any other smartphone available in the market today.
By comparison, the iPhone 7 Plus scored 181,807 and the iPhone 7 had a score of 173,575 in AnTuTu tests. The Galaxy S8 is way ahead of both these handsets. Its score is also higher than 162,423 of OnePlus 3T, the most powerful Android smartphone today. Google’s Pixel had a score of 140,807, even lower than the iPhone 6S Plus’ 142,063.
New Snapdragon, Exynos processors a blessing for Android phones
The S8’s performance gains come from the Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895 chipsets, both of which are produced using 10nm manufacturing process. The video does not reveal which of the two processors was used in the test Galaxy S8. The US is expected to get the Snapdragon-powered model while other markets would get the Exynos variant.
The AnTuTu benchmark test shows that devices running 10nm chips would deliver immense performance gains. LG’s G6 comes with older Snapdragon 821. Qualcomm claims that its latest Snapdragon 835 chipset is 35% smaller and 25% more energy efficient than its predecessor. It is designed to offer longer battery life and virtual reality support.
Will Galaxy S8 beat the iPhone 8?
Apple’s flagship iPhone 7 and 7 Plus use custom A10 Fusion chip made using 14nm manufacturing process. Even with slower clock speeds, Apple’s chips have maintained an edge over rivals for a long time. Though benchmark tests show the Galaxy S8 to be more powerful than the latest iPhones, it would be interesting to see how they perform in real-life tests. The iPhones have traditionally outperformed the best Samsung devices in real-life tests.
The Galaxy S8 might be the most powerful smartphone when it hits the store shelves next month, but it may not top the charts for long. Apple’s 10th anniversary iPhone 8 (or iPhone X) is expected to come out in September. The iPhone 8 will use TSMC-made A11 chipsets built using 10nm manufacturing process. The 10th anniversary iPhone is rumored to have a new design, OLED display, wireless charging, and augmented reality support.
