Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) provides a great way to share photos with friends and family members, especially those who live across the country. But now it appears as if there’s even more it can do. In fact, a mother has shared that her friends may have saved her daughter’s eyesight because of a photo which she shared on Facebook.

According to WREG, Tara Taylor posted a photo of her three-year-old daughter Rylee on Facebook. If you look at the photo, you can see a significant difference between how her eyes are captured.
As you can see, Rylee’s left eye appears to be glowing, while her right eye is the characteristic red eye we have come to recognize and expect in photos. While many would think the glow in the left eye is just the way the light was hitting it at the time it was captured, two of Tara’s friends urged her to get Rylee’s eyes checked.

They said that it might be nothing but that she should get it checked out because there might be a problem. Tara took her daughter to her pediatrician and then to a retina specialist, who diagnosed her with a rare condition known as Coats’ disease.
The problem causes blindness in one or both eyes and is particularly hard to catch in the early stages. However, if it is caught, the loss of eyesight can be prevented. The disease often strikes children, who may not notice that they are very gradually losing sight in one eye. Then it moves on to the next eye. According to Tara, it didn’t seem like Rylee was having any problems seeing. She was able to walk the balance beam in gymnastics and doesn’t complain about not being able to see. Often Coats’ disease is only picked up after both eyes are affected the condition. Also in most cases, it is noticed in a rather unexpected way.
