Facebook Bags 4 Of 10 Spots On iOS All Time Popular App List

Updated on

Facebook bagged four of the top ten spots in App Annie’s list of top ten most downloaded iOS apps of all time, published on Wednesday. Together, Facebook, Google and Apple took eight of the top ten spots.

Facebook most popular

The no.1 spot was taken by the Facebook flagship app followed by Facebook Messenger, YouTube, Instagram and Skype. Apple’s ‘Find My iPhone’ app acquired the 7th spot and the iTunes U acquired the 10th. The strong performance of iTunes U is attributable to China, where it was downloaded the most after U.S., noted App Annie.

The apps on the list have been found to have remarkable staying power that has lasted for several years now. Most of the apps on the list are more than four years old, and despite that, they continue to have millions of downloads per month. This suggests that majority of people when buying their first iPhone or iPad or upgrading to a new model are only installing these apps.

For all 10 apps, the U.S. leads in downloads. An important point worth noting is that most of the apps in the top 10 list have strong social and sharing features.

Revenue side tells a different story

App Annie ranked the iOS apps by worldwide downloads and revenue, and broke the results down into two sections: games and everything else. For the rankings, App Annie analyzed data dating back to July 2010. For determining the most used apps, it also made use of newer technologies.

If we look at the ranking of the ‘all time’ apps by revenue, then a completely different story can be seen. The top spot is taken by Pandora, followed by the messaging app Line, dating service Zoosk, Apple’s Pages word processor and Spotify. The only app among the top ten to generate all its revenue from paid downloads (and not from in-app purchases and subscriptions) was Apple’s Pages.

In the gaming category, the classic titles were the most downloaded ones. Candy Crush Saga acquired the first spot followed by Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds. Nine of the ten top-ranking apps were the casual games. In terms of revenue, Clash of Clans held the first spot followed by Candy Crush. Third place was held by Puzzle & Dragons.
