Updated on

A fire broke out early Saturday at a luxury apartment skyscraper in Dubai

Security guards inside one of the world’s tallest residential towers ran from apartment to apartment as fire alarms blared, calling for those inside to evacuate the building as part of it burned. At least six floors seem to be affected at this point. The Torch Tower contains 676 residential units with 24-hour security and concierge, and six retail spaces.

The fire started in the middle of the tower, rapidly spreading across some 15 floors, according to photos and videos from the scene.

The Marina Torch, also known as the Dubai Torch or The Torch, is inside the Dubai Marina in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The tower reaches 1105 feet, with 79 stories above ground. It’s one of the tallest residential towers in the world. Footage posted on social media showed what looked like molten glass and pieces of masonry falling down.

The fire started at 2 a.m. (5 p.m. ET Friday), when many people were out and enjoying the nightlife. A witness told that the building looked like “the Titanic going down”.

There are no reports of casualties at this time but thousands of people have been evacuated.
