How to Disable SMS Integration In Hangouts

Google has started to roll out an update to Google Hangouts for Android, which now comes with SMS/MMS integration.  Users can now check out their SMS messages as well as instant messages in one app – Hangouts.

The first time you launch Hangouts once your device has received updates, you’ll be prompted if you want to use Hangouts for SMS or not. If you tap yes, then your existing SMSs will be imported to Hangouts, and you’ll receive all your future SMS in the Hangouts app, instead of the regular Messaging app. If you’ve tapped “Maybe later” then you’ll continue to receive SMSs on the Messaging app.

But what if you tried it out and don’t want SMS in Hangouts? Don’t worry, there’s a way to disable SMS in Hangouts and continue using the default Messaging app for SMS.

To stop getting SMSs in Hangouts once you’ve enabled it, go to Settings > SMS and from General, toggle “Turn on SMS” to enable or disable this feature.

Now that you’ve disabled it, you’ll start getting SMS (or text) messages in your Messaging app.

If you’re on Nexus 5 running on Android 4.4 KitKat, then you’ll see an “SMS enabled” option in Settings > SMS. Tap on it to change your settings.
