First Look At The BlackBerry Krypton Images Unveils The New Design

Updated on

Some new leaked BlackBerry Krypton images suggest that the company is stepping away from its previous rounded design and glass backs. Instead, the phone is expected to have a Carbon Fiber back, which sets it apart from other phones featured this year. If these leaked images are legit, we are going to see an entirely new approach to BlackBerry phones.

Two images of the upcoming smartphone emerged on BlackBerry’s BBM channel. Although everyone is certain that the pictures feature the BlackBerry Krypton, the source’s authenticity hasn’t yet been confirmed. Hence, it is not clear whether this smartphone is really the BlackBerry Krypton.

The phone in the images noticeably differs from BlackBerry’s KEYone smartphone. The Krypton is expected to feature a round housing for its rear camera, which is also rumored to have a dual LED flash, based on these leaked BlackBerry Krypton images.

Unfortunately, these supposed BlackBerry Krypton images don’t reveal a lot about the phone’s specifications. It is not yet clear if the Krypton will be equipped with a 5.2-inch or 5.5-inch display. Still, it is expected that the supported resolution will be 1920 x 1088 and that the smartphone will sport Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 processor. Like the Samsung Galaxy S8, it will likely have 4GB of RAM. Another thing that is rumored is that the BlackBerry Krypton will feature the company’s DTEK and HUB security software, alongside Android 7.0 Nougat operating system.

One of the rumored features that will appeal to users the most is IP67 water and dust resistance, which will further protect the smartphone from unexpected splashes. Furthermore, the home button is expected to have a fingerprint scanner inserted.

We know that the BlackBerry Krypton earned its FCC certification and that TCL confirmed that the smartphone is to make its appearance in October. Francios Mahieu, head of global sales for TCL, said that the smartphone will appeal to business customers, just as the KEYone flagship smartphone did.

He says that business-focused customers are looking for a reliable phone with water resistance and a durable battery life. The Krypton is rumored to offer 26 hours of steady use, which would be perfect for consumers who want to ditch the physical keyboard but don’t want to compromise on battery life. It is reportedly equipped with a 4,000mAh battery.

The BlackBerry Krypton will be the first smartphone from this company to feature an all-touch-screen functionality. However, the company is expected to remain loyal to devices with physical keyboards. Mahieu believes that keyboards are “definitely a big element.” That being said, the company is focused on delivering more consumer-focused phones that will feature physical keyboards.

The Krypton is not expected to be a rival to Apple’s iPhone X or the Samsung Galaxy S8, but instead, it will likely function as a mid-range smartphone, similar to BlackBerry’s DTEK60. We shouldn’t completely give up on the upcoming BlackBerry smartphone. The Krypton could be quite reliable, as people will probably be able to use it for extended amounts of time for  messaging and working on the go.

Surrounded by tough competition, BlackBerry has had a hard time over the past several years. Apple, Samsung, HTC and LG have always made sure it stayed behind as a result of their future-proofed features and compelling marketing campaigns. Still, it remains for us to see whether the BlackBerry Krypton will be the smartphone to steal back the attention and its old fame and get more people to use its software instead of iOS and Android.
