May Book Releases – Grit: The Power of Passions and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth (Scribner, released May 3)

It’s graduation time of year, and here is an excellent book to give your favorite graduate. Researcher and scientist Angela Duckworth, who once struggled with finding her own intelligence and self-worth, has created an inspirational book that is, well, actually inspirational. Her premise is that each of us can learn to achieve, no matter what our circumstances or our IQ. All we need to develop is what she terms “grit,” a blend of perseverance and passion that can help us accomplish great things.

In addition to using her own personal insights, the author Duckworth uses a variety of other illustrations including observations of West Point cadets, National Spelling Bee finalists and interviews with top coaches and leaders.

May Book Releases – Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett (Little, Brown and Company, released May 3)

How far will you go to help the people you love? It’s a question Adam Haslett, a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, poses in this new novel. Set in London during the 1960s, the story is told from the alternating perspectives of five family members over the course of five decades.

Haslett combines humor with gut-wrenching emotion in this book that deals with mental illness and the strength of familial love.
