Fervent Facebook users may have another reason to use the popular social media website less. A recent study indicates that people who use Facebook on a regular basis to connect with friends and close family members may be more likely to snack on junk food after logging off. Dr. Keith Wilcox and Dr. Andrew T. Stephen (from University of Pittsburg) explained it well, “Because consumers care about the images they present to close friends, social network use enhances self-esteem in users who are focused on close friends while browsing their social network. This momentary increase in self-esteem leads them to display less self-control after browsing a social network.”

The researches conducted a total of five studies, involving 100 Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) users. The results of this study indicated that users who spend more time on the social media website were more likely to binge eat, have higher BMI indexes,  lower credit scores, and more credit card debt.

Earlier this year, Wilcox told Wall Street Journal, “Think of it as a licensing effect: You feel good about yourself so you feel a sense of entitlement. And you want to protect that enhanced view, which might be why people are lashing out so strongly at others who don’t share their opinions.”

The survey also indicated that frequent Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) users are also more prone to have psychotic episodes. Apparently, those who seek out validation through virtual means suffer from  mental health issues which could cause delusions about the connections. Fortunately, the more common issue at hand still remains to be the lack of self-control and overeating.
