Despite the pandemic last year, the world gained almost 500 new billionaires. It is not very difficult to guess the countries with the most billionaires. Similarly, guessing the cities with the most billionaires is also not tough, but a couple of changes last year sort of rearranged the entire list. New York City, for the first time in seven years, lost the top position to a Chinese city. Top Ten Cities With Most Billionaires

We have used the data from Forbes to come up with the top ten cities with the most billionaires. China dominates this list with four of its cities in the top ten. These four cities together added 96 billionaires last year compared to 53 added by six other cities in the list. Following are the top ten cities with the most billionaires:

  1. Hangzhou (47)

This Chinese city is the newest entrant in this list of wealthiest cities, replacing Singapore (10th spot last year). Hangzhou gained a net 21 new billionaires last year, while the total net worth of the billionaires in the city was $269.2 billion. Zhong Shanshan, whose bottled water company Nongfu Spring went public last year, is the richest person in the city with a net worth of almost $69 billion.

  1. San Francisco (48)

San Francisco, with a gain of 11 new billionaires, including Apoorva Mehta (Instacart founder) and Tony Xu (DoorDash CEO), was able to retain its spot. The total net worth of the billionaires in the city was $190 billion. Dustin Moskovitz, an early Facebook employee, was the richest person in the city, with a net worth of $17.8 billion. Moskovitz’s management startup Asana went public in September last year.

  1. Mumbai (48)

Mumbai is one of the three cities on this list that was able to regain its spot. This Indian city gained ten new billionaires, while the total net worth of the billionaires in Mumbai was $265 billion. Mukesh Ambani, chairman of conglomerate Reliance Industries, is the richest person in the city, with a net worth of about $85 billion. He is also the world’s 10th richest person.

  1. London (63)

London was ranked fifth previously. The city gained seven billionaires last year, including José Neves (founder of online luxury fashion retailer Farfetch). The total net worth of the billionaires in the city was $316.1 billion. Len Blavatnik, with a net worth of $32 billion, was the richest person in London last year.

  1. Shanghai (64)

Shanghai added 18 new billionaires last year, while the total net worth of the billionaires in the city was $259.6 billion. Pinduoduo founder Colin Huang, who was able to triple his wealth to $55 billion, was the richest person in Shanghai. This Chinese city is one of the three cities on the list that was able to retain its spot from the previous year.

  1. Shenzhen (68)

Shenzhen, popularly known as China’s Silicon Valley, gained 24 new billionaires last year. It was ranked seventh previously. The total net worth of the billionaires in Shenzhen was $415.3 billion. Ma Huateng, the founder of Tencent, was the richest person in the city with a net worth of $65.8 billion. Almost all the billionaires in the city are self-made.

  1. Moscow (79)

Moscow slipped to the fourth spot from the third previously. The city gained nine new billionaires last year, while the total net worth of its billionaires was $420.6 billion. Alexey Mordashov & Family, with a net worth of $29.1 billion, were the richest people in Moscow. A point to note is that most billionaires in the city are self-made, and many have close ties with Vladimir Putin.

  1. Hong Kong (80)

Hong Kong got nine new billionaires last year, but it wasn’t enough to retain the second spot it won in the previous year. The total net worth of the billionaires in Hong Kong was $448.4 billion. Li Ka-shing, a veteran investor, was the richest person in the city and added $12 billion to his worth last year.

  1.  New York City (99)

NYC lost the top spot by just one billionaire. Though NYC lost the top spot, it still ranks first when it comes to the total net worth of the billionaires ($560.5 billion). Michael Bloomberg, with a net worth of $59 billion ($48 billion earlier), was the richest person in the city last year. NYC got seven new billionaires last year, including Boris Jordan (founder of cannabis distributor Curaleaf).

  1. Beijing (100)

Beijing made the biggest leap in the Forbes list, from number four previously to the top spot. This Chinese city added 33 new billionaires last year. The total net worth of the billionaires in the city was $484.3 billion. Zhang Yiming, the founder of TikTok, was the richest person in Beijing last year. Yiming was able to double his net worth last year. Wang Ning, 34, was Beijing’s wealthiest newcomer.
