Size Comparison: iPhone 8 vs. iPhone 7 vs. Galaxy S8 vs. Google Pixel

Updated on

The infamous Twitter leaker @onleaks has been up to his old tricks again, providing the latest measurements for the iPhone 8, alongside some of the other top smartphones. So how do all of these devices compare?

iPhone 7

Of all major smartphones, the iPhone 7 is undoubtedly the smallest. Its 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1 mm measurements mean that it is the slinkiest contender here, partly due to the 4.7-inch display that now looks rather small. It is also a particularly slim device, but not quite the slimmest compared here. What can be said is that the iPhone 8 certainly seems a step forward based on the specs leaked by @onleaks, and Apple clearly feels the need to update its device range with this next-generation release.

iPhone 8

The iPhone 8 will be somewhat larger than the iPhone 7, measuring 143.5 x 70.9 x 7.7 mm. This will mean that Apple veers away from its usual obsession with slimness, producing a slightly thicker phone this year compared to last. However, considering that reports in the last 24 hours have indicated that the screen of the iPhone 8 will be larger than the iPhone 7 Plus, the marginal increase in device size must be considered a good achievement. The iPhone 8 will remain one of the most compact devices available on the market, yet could feature a 5.6-inch quad HD display; a first for Apple.

Google Pixel XL

Google Pixel

Google has managed to keep its Pixel device compact by only including a 5-inch screen. This means that the 143.8 x 69.5 x 8.5 mm handset will be roughly the same size as the iPhone 8, although the Apple device is significantly slimmer. Having said that, considering that the screen included in the Google Pixel is larger than the iPhone 7 smartphone, it does compare reasonably in terms of size, although it is far thicker than the Apple flagship.

Huawei P Series

Huawei P10

The Huawei P10 is the next cab off the rank in this comparison, measuring 145.3 x 69.3 x 7 mm. It also has a slightly larger screen than the Google Pixel, weighing in at 5.1-inches. Huawei has yet to establish itself as a household name in this niche, but continues to produce solid devices albeit perhaps lacking the character of those mobiles produced by the biggest players in this marketplace.

Galaxy S8

The recent Galaxy S8 release from Samsung is undoubtedly one of the outstanding smartphones available on the market, and the wraparound display included in this device means that it is particularly impressive. The 5.8-inch screen does not result in a massive handset, with the measurements of the device being 148.9 x 68.1 x 8 mm.

It is notable, though, that the iPhone 8 will be quite a bit smaller than this mobile, even though it is probable that the Galaxy S8 will feature the slightly larger display. Whether this will be a massive boost for Apple is debatable, but it certainly fits into the ethos of the Californian corporation for producing practical and sleek devices.

LG G6

LG is an increasingly important name in the industry, not least because Apple is considering utilizing the Korean firm to provide OLED panels for the iPhone 8. However, its own devices are also excellent, and the consensus of opinion is that the LG G6 is the best smartphone that the corporation has produced thus far. Its 148.9 x 71.9 x 7.9 mm size is pretty good considering that it includes a 5.7-inch screen, but it is still beaten out slightly by the Galaxy S8 in this department.

Galaxy Note 7

The sadly defunct Galaxy Note 7 featured measurements of 153.5 x 73.9 x 7.9 mm, while Samsung also included a 5.7-inch screen. As you can’t actually buy or use one of these devices, the measurements here are only included for comparison purposes..

Google Pixel XL

Google Pixel XL

The Google Pixel XL is the larger smartphone from the search engine mega-corporation, and it could be said that it is slightly disappointing in terms of size. Having said that, despite featuring a 5.5-inch display, it is somewhat smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus in terms of length and breadth, although it is also nearly 20 per cent thicker.

iPhone 7 Plus

The iPhone Plus range has undoubtedly been successful for Apple, but the iPhone 7 Plus does not fair particularly well in this comparison. Featuring measurements of 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3 mm, what can be said about the Apple handset is that it is pretty slim and competes well with most devices in this list in this area. But considering the fairly small for a phablet 5.5-inch display, this isn’t actually the most compact device, and will certainly compare very unfavorably to the iPhone 8 when it is released.

Galaxy S8+

And the relatively large size of the iPhone 7 Plus is perhaps underlined most succinctly by the recent release of the Galaxy S8 Plus. This phablet-sized device measures 159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1 mm, despite the massive 6.2-inch screen. Of course, a major selling point of this flagship is the wraparound display that has been included, and Apple is ready to follow suit with the iPhone 8. There will be no direct comparison between the Galaxy S8+ and any Apple device, as it is simply larger than anything that the Californian company will produce. But it will nonetheless be interesting to see how consumers react to the compact iPhone 8, and whether it will be a Galaxy S8 beater.

Nexus 6P

Finally, the Nexus 6P features measurements of 159.3 x 77.8 x 7.3 mm, and has a 5.7-inch screen. This smartphone is in the unenviable position of being the largest device in this list, although at least the depth of the device is pretty decent. In terms of its build size, it is hard to see consumers rushing to this little known device.
