Samsung Galaxy S5 To Be Waterproof; Will iPhone 6?

Updated on

Samsung is just a few days away from launching its highly-anticipated Galaxy S5 smartphone. The device is expected to be released at the Unpacked event in Barcelona on February 24 during the Mobile World Congress. We reported yesterday that the Galaxy S5 is confirmed to sport a fingerprint sensor, just like iPhone 5S. Though Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) used sapphire coating on the home button of its flagship device for fingerprint technology, the Korean company will reportedly use ultra-violet coating over its fingerprint sensor.

Galaxy S5 to be dustproof and waterproof

German website of the British telecom company O2 spilled the late February release date for Galaxy S5. O2 also teased that the Galaxy S5 will be waterproof, just like Sony Xperia Z. The teaser hinted that O2 will be among the first telecom carriers to bring the smartphone. Moreover, sources close to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.(ADR) (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) told ZDNet Korea that its flagship smartphone will be waterproof and dustproof. Users won’t have to worry if their Galaxy S5 accidentally falls in the toilet.

The Galaxy S5 will have a Personal Folder and Private Mode for user privacy. It is speculated to have a 5.24-inch display with 2K resolution, 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 16MP main shooter, 3.2MP front camera, Android 4.4 Kit Kat, and 3200 mAh battery. Samsung is expected to launch an improved version of Galaxy Gear smartwatch with its flagship smartphone next week.

Apple already owns a patent for waterproof display

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPhone 6 is another highly anticipated smartphone. The Cupertino-based tech giant has invested $578 million in Arizona in collaboration with GT Advanced Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:GTAT) to produce sapphire glass. Experts say that the scratch-proof sapphire will be used in the display of iPhone 6. Though it will make the device more durable and virtually unbreakable, it would push up the price. Expect iPhone 6 to have a higher price tag than the iPhone 5S.

As for waterproof feature in the iPhone 6, there have so far been only concept designs. That doesn’t mean the next iPhone has zero chance of a waterproof display. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) already owns a patent for a waterproof display that can be used in its future devices. Rising popularity if waterproof smartphones like Xperia Z can prompt the Cupertino-based company to use the technology in the iPhone 6.
