Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) is the only smartphone maker that has the might to challenge Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL). And it’s looking to do just that, so much so that its next flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone has been nicknamed “The iPhone killer.” Though the Korean company hasn’t revealed the launch date of Galaxy S5, media reports and rumors have been reiterating certain features of the new device again and again. So, let’s have a look at its rumored features to see if the Galaxy S5 could really be an iPhone killer.
Galaxy S5 design
Like Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) closely guards the design of its upcoming devices. Reports suggest that the Galaxy S5 will be launched in two forms, one with the usual plastic body while another will sport a metal chassis. The metal version will be the premium Galaxy S5 with a higher price tag. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) could use its antenna technology to make the device thinner.
Galaxy S5 display
According to ETNews, the Galaxy S5 will sport a 5-inch Super AMOLED display. We reported earlier that the new device will have a 2K or 2560 x 1440 resolution. If true, that’s going to be the highest resolution for a smartphone so far. The maximum smartphone resolution today is 1920x1080p. The Galaxy S5 is expected to have a pixel density of 560 pixels per inch.
Processor and camera
The Samsung Galaxy S5 is rumored to sport a 16 megapixel camera. The camera may also feature an Auto Focus and the ISOCELL technology that improves photo and video quality in low light environments. The Korean electronics giant has officially confirmed that it will bring a device with 64-bit Exynos processor next year. Analysts say Galaxy S5 will be the first device to feature the 64-bit chip. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has already been using the 64-bit A7 processor in iPhone 5S.
Galaxy S5 OS and battery
The device is expected to run on the latest Android 4.4 Kit Kat operating system. Google Inc. has already rolled out the Nexus and Moto X devices running on the Kit Kat version. Reuters recently said that the Korean company may follow Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) to bring the fingerprint scanner on its flagship device. But the surprising rumor is about its battery. The Galaxy S5 is expected to feature a 4000mAh battery that could make it a bulky smartphone, though it would improve battery life. Most smartphone batteries range between 2200mAh and 2600mAh.
Analysts expect Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) to launch the device in March or April 2014. Though the Consumer Electronics Show and Mobile World Congress will be held in January and February 2014, the company has avoided trade shows in the past. Galaxy S4 was announced in March and released in April, 2013.
