OnePlus 5 Price, Specifications, Registrations, Release Date

Updated on

Chinese smartphone vendor OnePlus doesn’t need supply chain leaks to get the word out on its upcoming phones. The company executives have leaked almost every major feature of OnePlus 5 ahead of its launch. So much so that there are unlikely to be any huge surprises when OnePlus unveils its next-gen flagship on June 20. However, one thing that no company executive has talked about yet is the OnePlus 5 price.

OnePlus 5 confirmed to have dual camera, Snapdragon 835

The Chinese company has been tweeting out hints almost every day. It has already confirmed that the OnePlus 5 would be powered by Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 835 SoC. OnePlus has also revealed that the upcoming flagship would feature a dual camera system on the back, similar to the iPhone 7 Plus. OnePlus 5 has teamed up with DxO to help enhance OnePlus 5’s camera capabilities.

Recent reports claim that the phone’s dual camera system would consist of a 20-megapixel lens with f/2.6 aperture and a 16MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture. Smartphone vendors are increasingly adding dual camera setups to their flagship devices. But we can expect the OnePlus 5 dual camera to be superior to most other devices as it has sought the help of DxO in improving the camera. DxO is the company behind the popular DxOMark benchmark on which the smartphone cameras are compared.

OnePlus 5 price will be…

OnePlus’s popularity has grown by leaps and bounds in just a few short years. The Chinese company is known for making premium smartphones with the latest hardware and offering them at about half the price of iPhones and Galaxy S line devices. Many would expect the OnePlus 5 price to be in the mid-range, just like previous generations. Can OnePlus afford to price a phone with Snapdragon 835 (the most powerful processor available to Android vendors) and dual camera system in the mid-range?

OnePlus knows it can’t survive for long with competitive pricing. It has consistently been increasing the price tag of its phones with each new iteration. For instance, the OnePlus 3 was priced at $399, and the OnePlus 3T had a base price of $429. So, the OnePlus 5 should cost more than $429. Now folks at Tecnoblog have revealed the full spec sheet along with OnePlus 5 price.

According to the publication, the base model of OnePlus 5 would cost $479. The pricing corroborates with a recent report from Case Fanatics. Tecnoblog claims the device will be available in two variants: one featuring 6GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage, and another with 8GB RAM and 128GB of built-in storage. The above pricing is for the 6GB RAM variant. It is unclear which markets would get the 8GB version, and how much it would cost.

The device is up for pre-order on OppoMart.com, where it is listed at $549 for the 6GB RAM model. That pricing is unlikely to be accurate for many reasons. For one, such a huge jump in price could take OnePlus fans by surprise, and some fans might be left disappointed. Another reason is that OppoMart’s listing has many errors. It has listed the device with a Quad HD display and 12MP rear camera. In reality, OnePlus 5 is said to have a Full HD display and 20MP and 16MP dual rear cameras.

OnePlus 5 registrations surpass 360,000

A small jump in OnePlus 5 price is unlikely to affect its sales. Even before the phone’s official unveiling, registration has opened on JD.com for Chinese users. The registration numbers indicate that customers are keen to get their hands on the device. In less than 48 hours of opening registrations, the device has received more than 360,000 registrations in China alone.

It’s worth pointing out that users are not required to pay a token amount while registering. It’s different from pre-orders. It indicates that users have expressed interest in the device without committing to buy it. Anyway, the huge numbers show that the phone is on track to be a major success.

OnePlus 5 specifications

Tecnoblog and multiple other leaks have almost confirmed that the OnePlus 5 would feature a 5.5-inch Full HD display with 1080p resolution. The phone is said to have a 3300mAh battery with Dash Charge technology. OnePlus has improved its charging technology to the extent that it could charge the upcoming flagship from 0% to 92% in one hour.

The handset is expected to feature an 8-megapixel front camera for selfies. According to Tecnoblog, there will be a “ceramic-coated” fingerprint sensor on the front. The OnePlus 5 will be available in red, black, gold, and a new “unicorn” color options.

The OnePlus 5 would run OxygenOS on top of Android Nougat right out of the box. In a teaser posted on Twitter, the Chinese company teased upcoming changes and tweaks to OxygenOS that will allow users to change the color temperature of the display. In another tweet, OnePlus indicated the addition of a blue light filter that would let users change the display temperature as per their taste.

Meanwhile, Twitter user krispitech has posted a render of OnePlus 5 back panel, and it seems to be legit. The post confirms that the device would have a metal frame. The dual camera system protrudes a little on the back. There are an LED flash and a noise-canceling microphone next to the camera sensors. The antenna band goes from one side to another on the upper part of the phone.

OnePlus 5 launch event

OnePlus has sent out press invites for the June 20 event. The next-gen flagship will be unveiled in Beijing on June 20, and the event will be live streamed worldwide via OnePlus website starting 12PM ET on the same day. OnePlus will be holding “pop-up events” in major cities around the world. A New York pop-up event will be held on June 20. Other events will be held in Berlin, Paris, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam on June 21.

The phone is expected to go on sale in key markets soon after unveiling.
