For a number of you, I can save you the trouble of reading this article by simply saying that unless you are looking forward to owing a phone with the best camera, bar none, on the market today you probably shouldn’t be looking at purchasing the Nokia Lumia 1020. If however that’s precisely what you want you can probably also stop reading now as it’s head and shoulders above anything else on the market presently. It is a camera first, and a phone second. If you’re someone who needs a digital SLR camera this won’t replace it, but it gets really close. If you want a phone that can replace your older, or even newer point-and-shoot digital camera, this does plus some.
Firstly, it’s a Windows phone, that’s never going to change. While Windows now boasts over 170,000 apps it’s, again a camera. It’s not cheap. In the United States you will be chained to AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) as the exclusive distributor for a two year contract and you will still have to pay $299.99 for the handset with no ability to add memory to a phone that takes sizable pictures.

Lets get to the camera’s specs, they’re impressive. The Lumia 1020 boasts a second-generation 41-megapixel sensor with optical image stabilization. Yes, 41-megapixels, that’s not a typo and only the beginning. Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V) says it uses a camera sensor format that is five times larger than a typical smartphone while offering six-lens Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash and a separate LED flash, a high-resolution 3X optical zoom, and it can shoot 1080p high-definition video. I don’t know what half that means beyond the fact that it provides lasting and new memories. Lasting because you took the photo, new because the naked eye can’t come close to what this camera can see.

In addition to auto-focusing, the camera allows for a menu of manual settings that well requires quite the manual if not an advanced photography course. Somehow, this is all backed into a phone not much bigger than an iPhone 5, with a lens that does make it a touch thicker than the iPhone because it won’t fit inside the phone that weighs just over 5.5 ounces.
Another great feature is the fact that the camera takes two pictures every time you take one. One at 38 megapixels and the other at 5 megapixels for easier sharing.
The phone comes with a 32 gigabyte internal, that again can not be expanded but also comes with 50 gigs of free cloud storage using AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T)’s Locker for a limited time.
