Samsung introduced its Gear VR at the same event as the Galaxy Note 7 in New York City last week.
The Gear VR will work in conjunction with the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, and other older smartphones from the Korean tech giant, according to Android Headlines.
Gear VR to ship August 19, same as Galaxy Note 7
It is interesting to note that the Galaxy Note 7 has a USB Type-C connector, while previous flagship handsets had a micro USB. Both the Samsung Gear VR and the Galaxy Note 7 are set to launch on August 19.
Samsung started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 7 last week, but buyers of the Gear VR had to wait until now to place their order. You can now make pre-orders from Amazon or Samsung’s own website.
Commentators say that the Gear VR offers significant upgrades over the previous edition. Alongside USB-C compatibility, the virtual reality headset is supposedly more comfortable to wear.
Sleeker aesthetic, same price
At the same time it is important to remember that the Gear VR is not a standalone headset. It is still powered by your smartphone, which means that it’s good news that the Galaxy Note 7 has got such good reviews for its display thus far.
When it comes to looks, Samsung has gone for a sleeker aesthetic with the latest Gear VR. Instead of a white back and a dark blue front, the new headset is all dark blue.
If you want the Gear VR but don’t want to splash out on the Galaxy Note 7, the headset will work with the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6 Edge and the Galaxy S6 as well. However the headset will not be compatible with other, older handsets.
