At a time when big-screen phones are a trend, a Chinese company is planning to release the world’s smallest 4G Android smartphone called Jelly. Unihertz recently introduced this tiny phone on Kickstarter. It’s small enough to fit in your coin pocket, the front pocket of your shirt, the smallest compartment in your bag, or the palm of your hand.
Jelly: small on the outside but not on the inside
Its size is clearly its USP, but what makes it more desirable is that it is 4G-enabled. And according to the company, it will support major GSM networks. The Jelly’s dimensions are just 3.6 inches x 1.7 inches x 0.5 inches, and it will have a 2.45-inch display with a 240 x 432 resolution. Despite its small size, it can hold dual-Nano SIM cards and has a replaceable 950 mAh battery which, according to the company, promises an average of three days of working time or seven days on standby.
The Jelly will come with a 1.1 Ghz quad-core processor, 2MP camera front camera and 8MP rear camera. The phone has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage (expandable to 32GB). The Pro version comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of ROM. The phone also supports Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth 4.0, and is equipped with several sensors like a G-Sensor, gyroscope, and compass. Unihertz will also offer an armband which will allow the handset to be used as a fitness device. The handset will be available in three colors: Space Black, Sky Blue, and Pearl White.
Though the smartphone is small, it runs Android Nougat 7.0 and will cost more than $100. The Chinese company also has a Pro version of the Jelly. The phone also gives buyers clear access to the Google Play Store and all its apps. The Kickstarter campaign has already raised over $150,000 against the original goal of $30,000, which the company hit in under an hour.
So far, the campaign has over 1,800 backers. The phone will be ready for shipping in August.
Jelly could be your backup phone
Clearly, the Jelly won’t compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung. Rather, it’s designed to be a backup device you can take to places you don’t want your premium smartphone to go.
“Jelly is designed to be small, but for a reason! Whenever it is unnecessary to take a bulky and expensive phone with you, just put Jelly in the coin pocket,” the company says on the crowd-funding page.
With over 30 days still left for the Kickstarter campaign, the phone can be ordered for $69 for delivery in August under the early bird offer. If you want an extra battery, you will have to shell out $9 more, and $10 more will get you an armband and a case.
If you have doubts about Unihertz’s ability, they say that they have a “decade of designing expertise in mobile devices, our mission is to design and create unique mobile products for modern explorers.” According to PCMag, Jelly is not their first phone, as previously they have released the 3G Android 4.4 Micro for $64.99.
