Official Android Prisma App Available To Install, But Beware Of Fake Apps

Updated on

Now that the Prisma app is finally available for Android, what has become photo editing joy for iOS users is now available to millions of more people. Thanks to the likes of Instagram and Hipstamatic and many other apps, everyone seems to love adding filter effects to their images. The problem is that with the popularity of apps like these, they have all become clones of each other, but with Prisma, we have something that looks set to rekindle our love affair with photo filters.

Getting started with Prisma

There is no sign-up process for Prisma. On my device, it started up straight into camera mode, allowing me to take a picture of something nearby quickly and then apply a filter from the selections at the bottom of the screen.

As I am testing the app on an Android device, I have to say that I do not know what the procedure is on an iPhone. However, for the Android version of Prisma, the filter selection process could not be any easier! All you have to do is swipe through the filters until you find one that interests you and then tap it.

After this, the app will start to do its work.

Be patient

Once you’ve decided which of the effects to add to your image, it’s a good idea to set your phone down and do something else for a minute or two because none of the image editing inside the Prisma app. Instead, it uploads your chosen image to its own servers and then adds your chosen effect.

Personally, I found that this took away some of the enjoyment I was expecting to experience from the app. I am not accustomed to having to wait for my device to do what it is supposed to do.

Add a watermark

If you’re planning on creating works of art within the Prisma app that are not just for personal viewing, like if you want to place them on your blog, you may be concerned about protecting your work from theft or unauthorized use.

Luckily for you, Prisma gives you the option of adding a watermark to your images, and whilst this on its own does not protect you from unauthorized use, it will make anyone who is thinking about using your image think twice.

Beware fake Prisma apps

The fact that this app is now available on Google Play is quite astounding, especially considering that it was in beta just last week.

If you’re considering heading over to Google Play and searching for Prisma, you should be aware that actually finding the official app is not easy at the moment. This is because there is a slew of apps with similar names which have cropped up in the last few weeks, presumably to take advantage of the craze the app has caused.

In fact, it is widely believed that there are more than 50 fake apps with “Prisma” in their names that are available on Google Play right now. Here are a few that you should avoid: Prisma Photo effects, Prisma Radio, Prisma Photo maker, Cartoon Prisma etc.
