As we’ve reported earlier, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has launched a new 16GB model of iPod touch that lacks the rear camera and loop wrist strap. This new model costs $229, and is Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s budget iPod touch for those who’re willing the purchase the device at a lower cost. The regular iPod touch with iSight camera retails for $299 for 16GB and $399 for 64GB models, which means there’s a difference of $70 for those who want to opt for a camera-less version of the 5th generation iPod touch.

iFixit Tears Down The iPod Touch

The folks at iFixit, like always, were quick to tear down the device today so that we can take a look at the internal changes. The overall conclusion was that iFixit discovered nothing changed in the new iPod touch, except the lack of an iSight camera, and as a result of this, there’s more room in the device making it a slight 0.06 ounces lighter.

The components that are found in this device are the exact same as found in the previous models of the iPod touch, but where the iSight camera and wrist strap would usually sit, there lies some of the flex cables rerouted slightly. Apart from that, the microphone is no longer at the back, but it is moved to the top edge of the device. Overall, apart from these few changes, the layout of the components remain the same.

With the exception of the flash memory, it appears that the IC’s on the 16 GB model’s logic board are the same as those found on the 32 and 64 GB models.

The device still comes with the same Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) A5 dual-core processor and 512MB RAM. Looking closer at the logic board, it was revealed exactly what was expected – the lack of a rear camera connector.

If you’re one who doesn’t use the camera often and can’t afford to spend an extra $70 for an iPod Touch with an iSight camera , then you can get this new model right now from the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s online store.
