Google Adds New Regions, Undersea Cables To Expand Cloud Computing

Google is expanding its cloud computing infrastructure in five new regions, and plans to build its own undersea cables. Now, the search giant has a direct investment in 11 cables.

Extends cloud computing infrastructure

According to the search giant, its Netherlands and Montreal cloud computing center will be operational in the first-quarter of 2018, followed by the centers in Finland, Hong Kong and Los Angeles.

Google deploys its cloud computing resources into different regions that are further divided into zones. These zones can have one or more data centers from where consumers can run their services. As of now, Google has 15 regions sub-divided into 44 zones.

No two regions are connected to each other and the same goes for different zones in the same region as well, notes ZDNet. Google believes in deploying applications across multiple zones and regions to save users from unexpected failures.

Undersea cables – how they help

Google plans to build three undersea cables by 2019 to take on rivals Microsoft and Amazon, as well as expand its cloud businesses in different regions. Google’s underwater cables would take different routes, including one from Los Angeles to Chile and the other from the United States to Denmark and Ireland. The third line will go from Hong Kong to Guam.

The cable running from Chile to L.A. has been named Curie cable (after famous scientist Marie Curie) and would serve cloud customers across Latin America.

Another cable, dubbed as Havfrue and running from the United States to Denmark and Ireland, would serve North Atlantic customers. Google is developing this cable in partnership with Facebook, while it will be built by TE SubCom.

In a blog post, Ben Treynor Sloss, vice president of Google’s cloud platform, said, “Together, these investments further improve our network — the world’s largest — which by some accounts delivers 25 percent of worldwide internet traffic.”

According to, Paypal will use Google’s network and infrastructure to improve their processes.

Treynor stated that since the search giant commands control over the design and construction processes, it can fully define the technical specifications, streamline deployment and deliver service to the users and customers quickly. Further, Treynor noted that after the cables are operational, they can easily make routing decisions to optimize for latency and availability.

Strengthening cloud platform in India

Separately, Google is also strengthening its cloud platform in India. The Google Cloud Platform (GCP) region, which is now live in the country, will encourage more local firms to adopt Cloud. When it comes to Cloud adoption, the search giant is very optimistic about India, which is home to over 50 million SMBs (small and medium businesses).

Speaking to IANS, Mohit Pande, Country Manager-India, Google Cloud said, “The launch of the Cloud region opens up new opportunities for several new partners who will benefit from building their services on Google Cloud.”

India’s Hike Messenger has ported all its messaging application and network, as well as its front-end traffic on to Google Cloud. Following the decision, the messaging app has witnessed a 25-30% drop in latency, along with enriching the user experience. Further, Google Cloud is helping the messaging app to lower its go-to-market time and effort.
