Galaxy S8 Initial Shipments To Be 40% Higher Than Galaxy S7 [REPORT]

Updated on

The Galaxy S8 is one of the most anticipated smartphones of 2017. It is widely seen as Samsung’s comeback device after the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. Sensing massive consumer demand, Samsung has decided to increase the first batch of shipments by 40% compared to the last year’s Galaxy S7. According to Korean publication The Investor, Samsung has also increased its S8 sales target to 60 million units. By comparison, the company had sold 48 million Galaxy S7 units last year, and 45 million Galaxy S6 units in the year prior.

Samsung to ship 16 million units in the first batch

Based on initial shipments, The Investor estimates Samsung to sell 55 million units through the end of 2017. Samsung might be anticipating huge pre-sales based on the hype around the Galaxy S8. In the first batch, the company plans to ship 16 million units, which includes 10 million of the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 and six million units of the larger 6.2-inch S8 Plus.

The Korean electronics giant had shipped 12 million units of the Galaxy S7 in the first batch last year. It’s quite possible that Samsung is producing its Galaxy S8 displays in large volumes before it starts supplying OLED panels for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8. Samsung has reportedly won a contract from Apple for the supply of 160 million OLED display panels. Both the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8 would feature OLED screens.

Samsung leaks Galaxy S8 Plus on its website

Since OLED displays are difficult to manufacture, producing its own device in advance would help Samsung counter potential scarcity of OLED panels when the iPhone 8 enters production. The publication added that the Galaxy S8 would be unveiled on March 29, and go on sale in mid-April. Other reports have indicated that the device would hit the store shelves in select markets on April 21st.

Separately, Samsung has accidentally leaked the Galaxy S8 Plus on its Singapore support page. The company has since taken down the page, but not before it was widely circulated in the media. The device listed on Samsung’s Singapore website had model number SM-G955FZKDXSP. Just a few days ago, the S8 Plus was spotted in India with model number SM-G955FZKDINS. The last few characters in the model number differ depending on region and carrier.

Galaxy S8: Rumored features and specs

Both the S8 and S8 Plus would feature 2K Quad HD Super AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895 processor, a microSD card slot, IP68 waterproofing, a 3.5mm headphone jack, iris scanner, and a USB Type-C port for charging. The Galaxy S8 is said to come with the Bluetooth 5 standard. China and Korea are said to get the 6GB RAM version of the handset, while other regions would get the 4GB variant.

Both the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus would come with Samsung’s own Bixby AI assistant. Bixby will be capable of speaking eight different languages including Korean, Chinese, and English. The voice assistant is said to support all the native apps on Galaxy S8.
