Facebook Inc (FB) Plans To Make Search Stronger

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) in the next six months, will make available a lot more content on the site through its search algorithm, says a report from the Wall Street Journal. During an earnings call on Wednesday, Facebook founder and Chief Executive made an announcement on the plans of making more content available on the site and even the famous Shakira video that made her the most loved celebrity on the social network.

The search algorithm of Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is at Zuckerberg’s focus, who wants to make substantial changes and improvements to it such that it improvises the customer experience by large. This will add to the social networks usefulness as more content will be made available for the users.

“There is huge potential — a lot of questions that only Facebook can answer, that other services are not going to be able to answer for you,” Zuckerberg said.

The new service from Facebook will offer people what they look for snatching users away from search engines like Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) or Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Bing. The search engines are used by people for lot many purposes of which entertainment is one. If they get their purpose solved on Facebook, they will spend more time on the site or the app. This would pose a threat to the businesses of existing search engines.

People’ and their needs is what matters most to Facebook. Whatever it does has people at the centre. One such initiative made by Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) was the introduction of ‘Graph Search’ last year using which people could search for connections among others. Finding people with similar tastes and preferences was easy using it. People could specify the criteria such as “My friends who like skiing,” or “people I work with who like trail running.”

“Now, we’re getting into more of the content, a huge amount of content,” Zuckerberg said, and added that the site is used extensively by people, who on a daily basis make a billion searches. Facebook has a big challenge of making searches available through more than a trillion posts. The team of engineers working on this project believe that this is a more difficult and tedious task than other Web search in existence. “There is just so much more content that needs to get indexed,” he said.
