Apple Watch 2 Expected By Mid To Late 2016: Analyst

Updated on

The Apple Watch is among the most popular wrist wear devices these days, and its next version, the second-generation Apple Watch, will likely arrive in mid to late 2016, claims Cowen and Company analyst Timothy Arcuri. The next-gen watch is expected to be thinner than its predecessor, reports Apple Insider.

Next Apple Watch with better battery?

Arcuri, who recently visited Asian suppliers, expects Apple to ship 18 million watches by the end of the year and 45 million units next year. The analyst noted that since 2016 figures are based on current data, this could be pessimistic.

Until now, not many reports have come out on the next Apple Watch. A report in June claimed the next watch would feature a FaceTime camera, expanded Wi-Fi and new materials. The next-gen watch is expected to perform a lot more activities without an iPhone with the help of a new Wi-Fi chip.

Another report in July claimed that the external design of the new hardware would roughly be the same but that there will be more room inside for housing a bigger battery. Apple has been sacrificing potential battery gains for thinner designs, but noticing huge demand for wearables that last 24 hours or more on a single charge, the firm is inclined to meet it. Presently, there are few smartwatches running more than 24 hours, but more than often they depend on technologies like e-ink or disposable batteries for the purpose.

40m iPhone in September quarter

For the September quarter, Cowen expects Apple to ship 40 million iPhones while for the next quarter, shipments are estimated to reach the mid-70 million range. The research firm backs the view that the initial iPhone 6s and 6s Plus models come with two different versions of the A9 chip (one from Samsung and the other from TSMC), but notes that the A10 will exist in a single form made by TSMC. The new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus come with 3D Touch display, because of which both are a hair thicker and heavier than their predecessors even though they have smaller batteries.

On Monday, Apple shares closed down 1.98% at $112.94. Year to date, the stock is down marginally, while in the last year, shares are up by almost 12%.
