Apple New iPad: 24k Gold Tablet For $10,200 At Burj Al Arab

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) unveiled two new iPad models last year. The first launch, in Spring of 2012, saw the tablet add 4G support, a better screen and a faster processor. The second launch went mostly ignored as there was little change to the model, some of the problems with the iPad 3 were fixed and the company upgraded the tablet’s port to Lightning 2.0. Now a hotel in Dubai has unveiled a premium variation on the company’s iconic device.

Burj Al Arab And The 24 karat gold Apple iPad:

The Burj Al Arab, a Dubai hotel known for ostentatious opulence, including a $19,000 a night room and an apocryphal seven star rating, has unveiled a new 24 karat gold iPad that will be available to guests staying at the hotel. The models come with custom software that allow visitors to the hotel to review its many services.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), it appears, had nothing to do with the design of the tablet computers, they are just the firm’s latest models with a custom gold case. The case features an Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) logo just above the logo for the hotel itself. Cnet’s Tim Hornyak points out the irony in the hotel’s slogan, “Stay Different.”

For customers of the hotel unable to leave the luxury of a golden computer behind, the hotel is perfectly willing to sell the model. The problem, though it’s hardly one for anyone who can afford to stay at Burj Al Arab, is the price tag. The hotel will charge customers $10,200 for the computer, a 1275 percent mark up on the most expensive iPad that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) offers.

The iPad was first introduced to the hotel last October, when Gold & Co. gave an iPad to the Burj Al Arab. The gift was, ostensibly, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, though it’s difficult to make that connection work. A Gold & co. spokesman, quoted by Cnet, said “The symmetry is obvious, as both the gold iPad and the hotel are unique in terms of extraordinary quality and design.” Breast Cancer Awareness seems not to factor in.

The gold iPad will be offered alongside the other luxury Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) products that Burj Al Arab offers, including a gold iPhone 5 and a gold iPad mini. The hotel also recently introduced a gold Blackberry Q10, which was surely accompanied by a sigh of relief from Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB)/Blackberry, not wanting to miss out on the thriving gold phone market.
