Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPad Mini 2 Delayed By Screen Glitch [REPORT]

Updated on

Consumers who are patiently waiting for the next iPad Mini 2 may have to wait longer than initially expected. According to ETNews, a Korean news website, the reason behind Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s delay is burn-in problems on the LCD panel.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPad Mini 2 Delayed By Screen Glitch [REPORT]

This glitch is apparently caused by the IGZO (indum gallium zinc oxide) technology that’s utilized for the panels manufactured by Sharp Corporation (OTCMKTS:SHCAY) (TYO:6753). Unfortunately, the smaller pixels that are required for the Retina display are now a challenge for technology.

The panels still don’t meet Apple’s technical standards

It should be pointed out that although the burn-in isn’t visible to the naked eye, the panels still don’t meet Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s technical standards.

In the meantime, the iPad maker is working towards a solution. The first step is to change suppliers and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is already thinking of negotiating with Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) to start supplying the displays for 2014. The company already discussed working with Samsung Displays for the iPad Mini 2. AUO (the company that originally supplied displays for the iPad Mini) wasn’t involved this time thanks to yield issues.

The tech giant’s initial plan was to receive 15 million panels from Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930), LG Display, and Sharp by the end of this year. Now that the Samsung display negotiation fell through, LG Display Co Ltd. (NYSE:LPL) (KRX:034220) and Sharp Corporation (OTCMKTS:SHCAY) (TYO:6753) are the only companies supplying the panels.

Apple may deteriorate

One industry insider explained, “If the burn-in problem is not solved, Apple will be in a fix. “If Apple relaxes the technological standards for the burn-in, consumers’ perception of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) may deteriorate, and if not, it will have to change its supply chain and delay the launch of the new product.”

The iPad Mini 2 is lot like the new iPad Air only smaller. The new device will feature a 7.9 inch screen with Retina display, A7 chip, advanced wireless technology, M7 motion co-processor, amazing mobile apps, 5 megapixel iSight camera, FaceTime HD camera and more. The device will arrive sometime this month.
