Apple Inc. (AAPL) Testing iPad Keyboard Similar To Surface Touch Cover [REPORT]

Updated on

The one thing Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Surface has that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPad doesn’t have is a clever tablet cover/keyboard accessory. Although Apple already has a similar wireless keyboard with Bluetooth which connects to the iPad, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has yet to introduce a newer version of their wireless keyboard in the last few years.

Apple testing keyboard

Jamie Ryan (who was a former employee for the Developer Relations Team at Apple) reported that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is currently testing a keyboard similar to Surface’s magnetic keyboard covers.

Ryan explained in a Gizmodo report, “It’s not clear whether the process is far enough along to make this Tuesday’s event, but they did say a few different styles had been in testing for awhile. This would certainly allow Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) to differentiate the larger iPad from its little brother and market it as the more ‘pro’ of the 2.”

The Surface comes with a Touch Cover, and it can be used as both a protective cover for the tablet or as a magnetic accessory that works like a keyboard.

Touch Cover 2 and iPad 5 releases

Tomorrow, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is set to release Touch Cover 2 and the new Surface 2 Tablet. The touch cover is a cloth that’s flat and thin. In addition to over 1,100 sensors that will improve accuracy on the second-generation Surface, it also has a traditional keyboard that’s thin but has keys that are pressable. Tomorrow, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is rumored to introduce their next generations of iPad tablets including the fifth generation iPad and second generation iPad Mini with Retina display. There is still an indication that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) may release a touch-cover-like keyboard for the iPad.

The Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) event will start at 10:00 am Pacific Standard Time on October 22nd (tomorrow). It will take place at San Fransico’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater. This venue is bigger than the Cupertino company headquarters venue Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) used to introduce the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S.
