Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has planned to build three giant, domed greenhouses in downtown Seattle. The online retail giant unveiled its planned design to Seattle city planners. These domes will have a variety of plants as well as mature trees, and will be the centerpiece of the company’s new headquarters. Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) said the biospheres will be designed to provide company employees an opportunity to work and socialize in a natural setting.
Amazon.com, Inc.’s Planned Skyscraper Project:
These domes will be a part of Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s planned skyscraper project, and will eliminate many problems employees go through in the traditional office spaces. The company will build its new headquarters in Seattle over the next six years, reports Financial Times. According to the architects, the domes will be 80-95 feet high. Along with the domes, there will also be three 37-story buildings spread over 3.3 million square feet area.
Biospheres Receive Mix Response
Though the project is highly ambitious, it received mix response at a public meeting. Review board architect Mathew Albores didn’t seem impressed at all. He said the domes are very similar to the Seattle Public Library and the EMP Museum. He also asked Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) why the company plans to place more trees inside the biospheres where it won’t allow the public, instead of putting those trees and shrubberies on the outside.
Apart from Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is also building a new circular spaceship-like campus in Cupertino, California. Jeff Bezos is addicted to futurism. His other futuristic projects include commercial space rockets and a 10,000-year clock. In December 2012, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) spent $207.5 million to acquire three city blocks in Seattle.
The company said that it will create landscaped areas, including a dog park, around the 6th Avenue and Lenora Street. Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has named the new project Rufus 2.0, the name of an ex-employee’s dog. The biospheres will also have retail space, but the company didn’t disclose whether it will be the first brick-and-mortar store by Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN).
Many review board members also raised questions about the energy demand of the domes. Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) shares were down 2.43 percent to $262.60 at 2:57 PM EDT.
