“We created this state tax rebate to give Connecticut families with children some additional relief,” Lamont said while announcing the program. “I strongly urge all families who claimed at least one dependent child on their 2021 federal income tax return to submit an application as soon as possible so that this rebate can be sent to you with no delays.”

A resident who has claimed at least one dependent child aged 18 or younger on their 2021 federal income tax return could be eligible for this child tax credit. Residents can claim the credit for children born on or before Dec. 31, 2021

This child tax credit is primarily aimed at helping middle-class families. Those with higher income rates may also qualify for this credit, but their credit amount would be reduced depending on their income.

To get the full child tax credit, single or married filing separately should have an income of $100,000 or less. The income threshold for heads of household is $169,000 or less, while for married filing jointly, it is $200,000 or less. The Department of Revenue Services estimates that over 300,000 households should qualify for this child tax credit.

How To Claim This Child Tax Credit

As noted above, the application period started June 1 and the last date to apply is July 31. In the program’s first week, over 90,000 Connecticut households filed an application to claim the Connecticut stimulus check. But as of last week, the department had received just 165,621 applications from families.

One reason for fewer applications so far could be the lack of awareness about the program. Another reason could be that many residents might not believe they qualify for the program, and thus, they aren’t applying.

Experts, however, recommend that any resident who feels they may qualify for the credit should apply as the application process is very user-friendly. Even those with annual income above the threshold should apply as they may still qualify for a slightly reduced credit.

To complete the application process, applicants need their federal adjusted gross income, as well as their filing status from their 2021 federal income tax return. Those who haven’t yet applied for the credit, can do so by filing an application with the Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services.
