After a week of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s getting blasted over the bendability of the iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s got its own hardware scandal on its hands with the Galaxy Note 4. 9to5 Google spotted the initial report at Korean-language website IT Today.
Galaxy Note 4 manufacturing problem
Many customers in Korea are reporting that their brand new Galaxy Note 4 has arrived with a gap that’s about as thick as a business card in their new phablet. The gap is between the edge of the display and the frame. Although it doesn’t sound like a huge gap, it’s just enough to create a space for dirt and dust to get in. It also basically negates the waterproofing feature Samsung supposedly included.
IT Today posted a picture of two Galaxy Note 4 phones that have the gap. Twitter is also filled with reports from other customers who have the same issue with their new phablet. A Samsung spokesperson reportedly told IT Today that they’re aware of the issue. However, there hasn’t been any news yet about replacing the defective phablets.
Galaxy Note 4 available in the U.S.
Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 4 last week in Korea. That was supposedly earlier than the company was originally planned because of expected pressure from Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It would seem that the company rushed the Note 4 out the door too early if so many of the phones are having such a serious manufacturing flaw. In the U.S., the Galaxy Note 4 will be available next month, although consumers are able to preorder it through the major carrier websites.
Several websites have compared the Galaxy Note 4 with the iPhone 6 Plus. In terms of display quality, the Note 4 is rated as being better by some. However, if there’s a gap between the frame and the display, that’s a major flaw that could cause consumers to opt for the iPhone 6 Plus instead of the Galaxy Note 4.
