BlackBerry Ltd Sends Invites For September 24 Event

Updated on

BlackBerry Ltd NASDAQ:BBRY TSE:BB said today it is planning a number of invite-only events for Sept. 24. The Canadian smartphone maker will hold the events in the cities of Toronto, London and Dubai, according to a blog posted on its website. Other than the date and the cities, details on the event are scarce.

BlackBerry plans event this month

As is typical of technology companies, BlackBerry remains tight-lipped about what it will be unveiling. The blog post about the event is called “See The Bigger Picture,” and the company said the Inside BlackBerry team will be at the event.

The company has already been building buzz around its upcoming Passport smartphone. As a result, it seems quite likely that it will be officially unveiled at this event. It seems a little odd to play dumb, however, unless there is much more to be announced. BlackBerry has made no secret about its square-shaped Passport phone, which management says is perfect for people who like to read on their smartphones because the screen is wider than the screen on a standard rectangular smartphone.

Possibilities other than the BlackBerry Passport

So is BlackBerry just trying to be coy about a product everyone already knows about, or is the company sitting on something even bigger? One possibility that the company could be planning to unveil is a rumored service called BlackBerry Blend. Know Your Mobile reported that the company is planning to unveil the service along with the BlackBerry Passport.

Indeed, the title “See The Bigger Picture” could be a reference to BlackBerry Blend, which enables users to see everything stored on their BlackBerry devices and work with documents from their company’s intranet on their BlackBerry phone. The service is also said to be capable of backing up and restoring data.

Another possibility is some sort of tablet, although rumors about a BlackBerry tablet are pretty thin. There are also other rumored devices on the company’s roadmap, including the Q20 Classic smartphone and the BlackBerry Manitoba Z3.
