What’s on your bucket list?

Is it swimming with sharks? Watching the Northern Lights? Or possibly, climbing one of the world’s most famous mountains…

Flash Pack, experts in small group adventures for 30 and 40 year old solo travellers, have created an interactive graphic that reveals just how many steps it takes to complete some of the world’s most famous hikes.

Using a calculation of 1 mile = 2,000 steps, they looked at the length of 28 hikes, ranging from comfortable strolls such as the UK’s Hadrian’s Wall Path and Mount Batur in Bali, to bucket list items including the Everest Base Camp Trek and Table Mountain in Cape Town, to discover the average step count for each.

The health conscious among us will be pleased to discover that 96% of the hikes on the graphic can help you to hit your daily step target of 10,000 steps. As more and more of us succumb to FitBit culture and become more aware of our own personal fitness, the walking holiday hype skyrockets. Walking tourism generates up to £1.26billion just for the Scottish economy. Sojern data reveals that two thirds of Brits considered a ‘staycation’ in 2017, whereas only one in six would have considered this in the past

The longest hike on the list is the colossal Snowman Trek. Located in Bhutan, the Snowman Trek takes an average of 400,000 steps to complete. That’s enough to hit the recommended step target for 40,000 days or almost 110 years. The trek is renowned for its difficulty factor and takes 25+ days to complete whilst winding through 11 passes in the high Himalaya. With unpredictable weather prevalent throughout this 16,000 feet high journey, the Snowman Trek is one of the hardest treks on the planet.

Surprisingly, the shortest hike on the list is one of the most famous mountains in the world. Towering 1086 meters over Cape Town, and around 500 million years in the making, Table Mountain is a playground for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The mountain takes an average of 7,000 steps to climb, but although the figure is low, the journey is challenging and shouldn’t be looked over because of its step-count.

The graphic also reveals some interesting comparisons between hikes.

The Sierra High Route, found in California, takes 390,000 steps to complete which is 5.5 times longer than climbing the 70,000 steps to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

The Kalalau Trail is a long coastal walk through paradise on earth; Kauai, Hawaii. Taking 44,000 steps to complete the total hike is 22 miles and would take a leisurely three to five days to complete. In contrast, Tour du Mont Blanc gives you the chance to hike through three countries in 10 days and takes 210,000 steps to complete. You could walk the Kalalau Trail almost five times to reach the same step count as TMB.

For intrepid travellers wanting to explore the globe

When it comes to breaking down the origins of the hikes, North America is home to seven popular hikes with a combined step count of 812,000 steps. Six of the hikes are in Europe, and these have a combined total of 620,674 steps.
