Sony recently announced plans to replace its Music Unlimited service with Spotify. The service comes to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 with a new app. Sony believes the partnership will expand Spotify around the globe.

The music app is already available on select internet-connected televisions and streaming box sets, but Spotify is working closely with Sony for a more customized experience. This partnership means the app will allow users to stream music while playing a game and won’t hinder sound effects.

Spotify offers free and paid services

Spotify’s service is free if users don’t mind ad interruptions. For those who want an ad-free experience, Spotify Premium is available for $10. Those who aren’t already Spotify customers but want to use the PlayStation app will have to sign up for an account.

The downside to the new Spotify for PlayStation app is that it appears cut-back to other versions. Users will see all their playlists in their account and every song in the list on their music feeds, but there is no way for users to browse favorite artists or albums saved in collections. Spotify clarified that users can find every album and song on the app, but they will have to locate specific songs via the search feature.

Spotify plans to improve PlayStation app

The Spotify Connect feature enables users to browse or control playback in the app with their smartphone or tablet. The music streaming company added that it would improve the app over time.

Spotify is one of the most popular streaming music services. The company boasts over 30 million tracks and 60 million active users. There are also 15 million paying subscribers. Sony’s decision to replace the original music app with Spotify is a big move. It will give PlayStation users a better option for music and increase the number of subscribers to Spotify. This addition will enhance the entire gaming experience for PlayStation gamers.
