Roughly six years after Sony began working on Project Morpheus, it has officially confirmed that the PlayStation VR will arrive in October 2016. PlayStation VR is a virtual reality headset developed under the Project Morpheus. The headgear has been priced at $399 compared to $599 for Oculus Rift and $799 for HTC Vive. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said during a press event that it will forever change the way users interact with games.

Why did Sony Choose October for PlayStation VR launch?

October is still several months away. It will give the Japanese company enough time to produce the headset in large quantities to meet anticipated demand. Developers will also have sufficient time to get their games ready for the new device. Sony said more than 230 publishers and developers were working on games for PlayStation VR. The company is expected to make available about 50 titles by the end of this year.

Some of the most anticipated titles include Eagle Flight from Ubisoft, and a new Star Wars Battlefront that will be created between Electronic Arts, DICE, and Lucasfilm.

How much is it going to cost?

Sony has priced the PlayStation VR at $399. That’s a real bargain for PS4 owners. For others, it’s not the actual price. The headgear is designed to plug into PlayStation 4. If you don’t already own a PS4, it is going to add to the total cost. The Japanese company has sold more than 36 million units of PS4 worldwide since late 2013.

The virtual reality headset is not a standalone unit. You will also have to buy a PlayStation Camera and Move controller peripherals. The company did not reveal how much the accessories bundles would cost. Andrew House said the main reason Sony omitted camera from the headset was that most PS4 owners already own the camera. Even with its accessories, the PlayStation VR will be more affordable than Oculus Rift and HTC Vive that both require powerful PCs to function.

PlayStation VR features and specs

The VR headset weighs roughly 610g while the processor unit weighs 365g. It features a 5.7-inch OLED display with 1080p resolution that can serve games at up to 120 frames per second. It has a 100 degrees field of view. Sony says it includes a six-axis motion sensing system. With a Cinematic mode, it extends beyond gaming. The PlayStation VR lets you watch videos on large virtual screens. Other processor unit functions include 3D audio processing and Social Screen.
