Ouya Founder Says Game Console Will Be Released Every Year

Ouya could be the revolutionary game console we’ve all been waiting for. Julie Uhrman (the founder of the Android-based game device) says Ouya will release a new version every year to keep up with the ever-changing technology industry.

“Our plan is to have a yearly refresh of Ouya where we leverage the best-performing chips and take advantage of falling component prices to create the best experience we can at the $99 price point. If we could do it for less than $99, we would,” she explained,

Unlike most of it’s competitors like Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and Playstation 3, Ouya is made from mobile technology. The new game console will arrive in June at big box stores such as Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT), and GameStop Corp. (NYSE:GME). Right now, interested parties can pre-order the Ouya game console online. Those who backed Ouya through its Kickstarter campaign will received their game consoles next month.

The current goal for Ouya, according to Julie Uhrman, is to find developers who are willing to create quality games for the console, which will feature the Tegra 3 processor. Since Tegra 4 processor is on it’s way, some people are wondering if the Ouya will still be relevant when it comes out, especially considering there is no word on when or if next year’s device will feature Tegra 4.

The Ouya game console could be just what the gaming industry needed, especially since the traditional game console has lost some consumer interest. Thanks to the influx of media-rich mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers, consumers are more likely to download a cheaper game on their phone than they are to purchase a hot new Nintendo game title that retails for about $50.00. Depending on the quality and complexity of each mobile game, these games might cost more than the traditional price range of $2.99 to $5.99.
